1) Roger Glover, Welsh-born bassist with Deep Purple and Rainbow, plus solo stuff and producer of lots of peoples records throughout the decades (including Quo), is 77 today. A Glover high-light for me is when his bass notes thunder in on the intros to the early live versions of 'Smoke on the Water'. An incredible sound!
2) William Michael Albert Broad, was born on 30th November 1955 and is 67 today. In late '76, with a name-change to Billy Idol, he formed Generation X and had moderate success with them until 1981 when his management advised him to move stateside. There he had quite a successful solo career and continues to record and gig up to the present day.
This clip features Generation X's first single which aired on Marc Bolan's TV show in 1977 - in essence the former glam star passing the baton to the new punk movement!

Roger Glover seems to have been around forever. And has always seemed active. But given that he was playing on some of the music I first started listening to as a youngster, that isn't really a surprise. In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head; these are the albums that really started the ball rolling for me. I own one Generation X single called Wild Youth. I probably haven't played it since about 1977 However, I did recently play the full extended 12" version of White Wedding and it's still a belter. I think it features Steve Stevens on guitar so that would explain a lot

All of the following have a birthday today: Lou Rawls (1933-2006), Billy Paul (1934-2016), Sandy Nelson (1938-2022), Eric Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult (1944- ), Bette Midler (1945- ) & Gilbert O'Sullivan (1946- ).
This is Eric Bloom, lead vocalist for Blue Oyster Cult on a 1974 track 'ME 262' from their 'Secret Treaties' album, a good two years before their big hit 'Don't Fear the Reaper'. Interesting lyrics and a good rock tune. Couldn't get a good live version of this though!

Guitarist Tom McGuinness was born in London on 2nd December 1941 and is celebrating his 81st birthday today. He joined Manfred Mann's band in the 60s, along with vocalist Paul Jones and after their careers diverged, they both linked up again in 1979 when they formed The Blues Band. After many years of recording and gigging, they eventually hung up their hats only this year with the release of a final album, 'So Long'. Here is a three-song clip of them from 1980 at The Rockpalast, with Tom in the white jacket taking lead vocals on the second track, Elmore James's 'Talk to me Baby'. I have their first two albums mothballed somewhere - must dig them out and give them a spin.

Ah, Blue Öyster Cult. Again, the Secret Treaties album is going back to my teenage years. I worked at Edinburgh Zoo during the school summer holidays and I bought that album with my first wage. First time I'd ever had money! And I loved it. I still do and regard it as by far their best. Astronomy is one of my favourite songs ever. I think there's a live version of ME 262 on the On Your Feet Or On Your Knees live album released the year after. I'd need to dig it out. Only ever saw the band the once, back in 1978, and it was a terrific gig. Stands out in the memory. Same tour that gave us their Some Enchanted Evening live album. I'm similar to you, quodec . I grabbed the first album by The Blues Band. It was a sort of official white bootleg type thing. Long gone from my collection. They sprang up as a sort of antidote to all the New Wave stuff dominating the world at the time. When I think of Tom McGuinness, I probably think more of McGuinness Flint if I'm honest. That version of Manfred Mann, although I remember them, were a little before my time in terms of being interested in music.

Only ever had one BOC album, the live one with the horse (or something) on the cover. That song (ME262) has the weirdest lyrics I’ve seen in ages! I used to think they were a prog-ish band, think I was wrong now!😉🤔

John Michael 'Ozzy' Osbourne was born in Birmingham on 3rd December 1948 and celebrates his 74th today. In the late 60s he met Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Tony Iommi in various band set-ups and they eventually came together and settled on the name Black Sabbath in 1969, calling themselves after a 1963 horror film. Their first single 'Evil Woman' was released in January 1970 and two albums, 'Black Sabbath' & 'Paranoid' followed in the same year. Huge success followed on both sides of the pond. However, by 1979 tensions within the band had increased and Ozzy was kicked out, but instead of drifting into anonymity he launched a solo career under the Blizzard of Ozz band name, releasing several highly successful albums, including 'Blizzard of Ozz', 'Diary of a Madman' and 'Bark at the Moon', which more or less outshone anything Sabbath had to offer at the time. He did return to the Sabbath fold in 1997 and sang with them more or less continuously until they finally pulled the plug in 2017. Personally, I'm not a particular fan of the Sabbath/Ozzy brand but I do like the single 'Never Say Die' from their 1978 album of the same name.

I flirted with Black Sabbath as a teenager. In the musical sense that is The single Paranoid was the first thing to catch my ear and I borrowed the album at school. I was blown away with Fairies Wear Boots in particular and asked my mum to get me Volume 4 for Christmas. I loved that album even more. And then I sort of drifted away. I think the doom-laden riffs began to get a bit tedious and I've only picked at the band's catalogue ever since, Heaven And Hell being the main highlight. Ozzy's solo work has pretty much passed me by with only the odd track reaching my collection. I've got the singles Crazy Train and the much more recent Perry Mason, which are both great. When I see or hear Ozzy being interviewed, I always find him a funny and interesting character. Quite genial. It's pity he's fast becoming known for the self-publicising antics of his wife as much as his own singing career.

Nice one👍 Never have gotten into Ozzy-Sabbath at all, Dio-Sab is miles more to my taste, ‘Mob Rules’ and ‘Dehumanizer’ are faves. Ozzy solo? ‘Blizzard..’, ‘Tribute’, ‘Bark..’ and ‘Ultimate Sin’ are brillo! After those though, I’m out. Not a fan of Zakk's tiresome pinch harmonics all over the place! 😉

Guitarist Gary Rossington was born in Jacksonville, Florida on 4th December 1951 and is 71 today. He is the last remaining member of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd band, who had released five studio albums, before tragedy struck them in an airplane crash in October 1977, after which the remaining members disbanded for a decade. This song 'Call me the Breeze' is from their second album, 'Second Helping' and Rossington in the 'flowery' jacket plays a mean solo in it.
p.s. Apparently, Rossington's school gym teacher was a Mr Leonard Skinner, hence the band name!

I was never a huge fan of all that Southern Fried Rock stuff but that cover of J J Cale's old song is a cracker. The only Lynyrd Skynyrd album I ever actually owned was Second Helping. But I guess most of us have the Sweet Home Alabama single. Just to get Freebird on the B-side

Hey quodec , I’m not certain (only ‘kinda’) but I think Rick Medlocke was with Skynyrd back at the start too (on drums!!) and afaik he’s still there (on guitar ’course!) I saw them support Purple in the old ‘Point’ 2003, I’m a big DP fan and love S.Morse too, so I was really there for them, but y’know what - Skynyrd blew DP away that night, I remember being shocked that I enjoyed them far more. All Skynyrd’s stuff up to ‘Street Survivors’ is must-have stuff imho! 🤘

1) Legendary Welsh-born blues guitarist Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown fame is 75 today. This is a live version of 'Tell Mama', from the band's 7th studio album 'Street Corner Talking', released in 1971.
2) J.J. Cale was born on 5th December 1938 and would have been 84 today. He died in 2013. This is probably his most well-known song:
3) Richard Wayne Penniman, aka Little Richard, was born on 5th December 1932 and would have been 90 today. Along with Chuck, Jerry Lee, Elvis etc, he invented rock 'n' roll in the 50s. 'Here's Little Richard' was his first album released in 1957. Most of the songs on it were written by him, including these two, 'Long Tall Sally' & 'Tutti Frutti'.

Quite a list today. I saw Savoy Brown support Quo in 1973 (with Jackie Lynton on vocals) and I got the album Boogie Brothers on the strength of that. Wasn't keen on it though. A schoolmate of mine loved it though. J.J. Cale I am a big fan of. The first time I became aware of him was when I bought (wait for it) a Georgie Fame single way back in the mid-70's. It was a fabulous cover of Cale's Everlovin' Woman. I still play that and the original regularly to this day. So good, in fact, I'm sticking both up here They're timeless. The slide on Georgie's version is excellent. Little Richard; the name speaks for itself. As influential as it gets along with Chuck, Jerry Lee, Elvis and Buddy Holly. Funnily enough, the only record I ever owned of his is this one. From the 80's. Still got the 12" kicking around somewhere. Not exactly his most well known work but I liked it. So there
