(Thanks to paul70 for the inspiration by the way with his Tom Jones thread) Shouldn't they have done a version like this?

Edit: Rod beat QuoThe album it came from was recorded late '75 to early '76 and was released in June '76 Quo's version was released in December '76

I liked both versions. I just couldn't grasp why there were two bands or shall we say musicians who came up with their respective versions almost at the same time. Here's Quo's WSOL:

After WSOL became a hit for Hank Thompson, Kitty Wells sang a song to counter WSOL to which she stuck up for the women as in men aren't always the innocent ones. In fact this song gave Kitty the honour of being the first female to hit the no.1 spot in the US country charts.

It just goes to show what a great band Quo are! Rod Stewart could have made a really great version of this but missed out on an almost certain hit! Both great versions but Quo's version any day!!

I think Quo's version is great, Rod Stewart version okay. So no, imo Quo should leave it just the way it is (and play the whole song, with the great intro). Rod Stewart did it in typical The Faces style, which resembles the Stones. Anyway, I will always prefer the more up tempo Quo sound, although Stones are great too! The original song sucks big time though!

It's been a while since I heard it, but isn't Quos demo (bonus material on BFY) in the same vein as the Rod version? I can't say that I ever really liked Quos official version, mostly because of the sterile drums, almost like a drum machine. iMHO this single was the first sign that something wasn't right. The demo is lots better, sounds more like a real band, so my answer on the question is Yes!

Quo version the best. Intro is in the top 10 quo intro's but they dont do it justice live. FYI Roger Glover plays bass on this recording i believe.

The demo version is very similar to Rod's. I wouldn't mind betting someone (either Rod or Quo) heard the other's demo, and thought "that sounds like me/us - I'll have a crack at that and beat them to it".
It's that laid back country groove shuffle thing, that the Faces and the Stones seemed to be able to do so effortlessly, but with Quo it feels a bit more formulaic, because they're so damn tight, like a metronome.
