I've seen the trailers for the new ITV series and it has shootings, exotic locations and action sequences. I thought the appeal of the original was the downbeat realism.

Totally agree.
I didn't know there was a TV series coming out but I guess they think they have to deal with a different audience now. That b&w downbeat won't get the viewing figures. I couldn't say if that's true or not.
One of my favourite films is The Ipcress Files. Seen it loads as well as the two sequels. It nails the 60's almost as much as The Beatles.

Guy Dolman's portrayal of Colonel Ross is brilliant, he's a totally ruthless bastard who cares nothing for Palmer, they won't top that in some silly ITV production. I saw an interview with former intelligence officer Ted Allbeury years ago, part of a schools programme on literature, and he said that though he had never met a George Smiley type he said the intelligence services were full of Harry Palmer's.

The original film and its sequels were deliberately designed to be the complete opposite of the glamour of the James Bond 007 films.

Michael Caine was probably at the peak of his early popularity and was perfect in the part.
Gordon Jackson was in it as well if I remember rightly. And Sue Lloyd who I vaguely recall being in a prog when I was a kid called The Baron. Crossroads as well I think.
It was a terrific film and I rarely miss the chance to watch it when it pitches up on TV. Which is quite regularly.

I also liked the morning after the night before look in 60's films, no need for those boring sex scenes so beloved by the 80's pervy directors( It'll be known as the Weinstein gambit) of American pap, if it's morning and the girls hair was messed up and she was wearing the hero's long sleeved shirt or the strategic sheet placement occured we knew what had happened and moved on with the film.

Watched it, like Heartbeat with Spies. It's Like listening to Thirsty Work having grown up on the big five albums..the names the same. It highlights what a stand out film was produced in 1965, the brilliant scenes between Palmer, Dalby and Ross and the faultless supporting cast, photography, music and direction. In the new one the British Army prison Colchester is a dirty run down dump where Palmer walks about a bit. Everything at Camp Colchester is done at the double and everything gleams, polishing as punishment. it's poor fare.

Certainly much better than tonight's "Our House" on ITV when there was an outage of transmission and the screen went blank for some time with no explanation.

Haven't watched it. I might do. But I'll do it on catch-up or on demand so I can either avoid or flick through the adverts. I no longer tolerate these It's funny how some things like this are 'polished up' for a new audience and yet others are remade perfectly. Like Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Although I suppose that was the other way round. TV series to movie. Heartbeat with spies. Ah, the obscure Quo link. Like it

The film of Tinker, Tailor has the funniest spy rendevouz ever.
I'm a spy, I'm on a secret mission, I'll sit at this table in plain site without an escape route in broad daylight, it's my first day...it' s my last day.
