Hi guys,
I was of the opinion until of late that Roll Over Lay Down was not a great song compared to other classics. I admit I was incorrect. The recent live versions are not good at all but up until Alan left it was unbelievably heavy. I don't like what has become of ROLD. Francis seems to want to ruin it wirh lazy vocals and guitar solos that are all over the place.
Sorry guys. Not for me now but a great old tune.
See you out there somewhere soon.
SWISS

Controversial opinion time:
Overstayed its welcome in the setlist to the point that the band were going through the motions even in the 90s. Didn't have the benefit of refreshed energy like the likes of Down Down, Paper Plane or Big Fat Mama benefited from.
Not an *amazing* or undroppable track, and arguably too long, just one that continued to appease the heavier fans and the fans of "chuggers" while most around it fell. As others have suggested, potentially fantastic guitar work but probably not once Francis has had to play it thousands of times without rest.
It deserves a dignified retirement rather than a graveyard slot starting the hits procession. For years it's been that point in the gig where you know there's nothing interesting or different coming afterwards and they're just going through the motions.

I think what you are highlighting there is less of an issue with the song & more of an issue with Quo having a history of playing the same set every night of a tour & only making slight tweaks from tour to tour - things are bound to get a bit stale. It's a real shame that they don't shake things up a lot more from tour to tour - many bands do so from night to night! It's not as if they haven't got the back catalogue to do it, or the ability to throw the odd interesting cover into the mix on occasion. It would certainly help to keep the live performances a bit more dynamic & interesting for the audience too - how novel to turn up for a gig & not already know what the set list will be!

In their never ending push to make the set & sound 'tight', playing the same stuff constantly because they couldn't be arsed rehearsing, Quo lost the 'swagger' that songs like this need, many moons ago.

I personally think it is a genuine classic. But the quality of some live renditions, especially more recently, don't do the song justice. Most, it has to be said though, are terrific. The versions from Milton Keynes and Liverpool Pops in particular make the hairs on my neck stand on end, they're that good. And although I haven't seen it for a long time, I'm sure there was a live version from TOTP 2 in or around 2000 that was up there with the very best. Never released on audio as far as I know. I'm working on memory so forgive any lapses As we have the original studio version up here, I have to say that it still gives me goose bumps. Probably because it takes me back to a time when I was in total awe of everything the band did. Music; a time machine if you want it to be. Those opening thumps, light by later Quo standards, immerse me totally. The neck goes, the feet tap and I'm transported back to the days of brown wallpaper and 3-bar electric fires Whatever renditions came later, the track is and always will be magnificent in my eyes.

Make no mistake though - this track was Quo in their prime.
Video complete with 'headbanging' camera work.....

One of the best, no question. Blissfully good. A boogie workout from start to finish, magic Agree it's not been great live since matt left. It was amazing while he was there, far better than the mid to late 90's I just wish the single had more profile Its fantastic but radio and hit compilations of course play the studio version, itself a classic From memory mortified is correct. Think I lost my summer pops CD though, would be good to listen again some day MK, 82,Live!,the single. I don't think I could begin to choose my favourite version it's just a brilliant song

A great song.
Deceptively melodic.
I simply don’t like the way Francis has played it live for decades.
Some of the best of Francis guitar work before he meddled with it live.
There was a time when I thought it was a bit meat n potatoes. But as the great live tracks have been ditched. It stands out more.

Always annoyed me that they didn't include the Live ep version on 12 Gold Bars, which they then did with the live single of Caroline on 12 Gold Bars vol 2 - just to annoy me more!

As it seems I will never get my wish and see the return of Juniors Wailing and Someone's Learning to open the set (as mortified said, music is a time machine), it would be great to get ROLD as the second song after Caroline. Great start that used to be.
