Probably Glasgow Apollo in it's sweaty pomp.
Mentioned in dispatches:
Paris L'Olympia Newcastle City Hall Edinburgh Playhouse Liverpool Philharmonic Blackpool Opera House Bristol Colston Hall
I think the general trend seems to be that large arenas may be functional but they cannot generate the atmosphere of the smaller theatres.

Hammersmith Palais. Big old dancehall with bar open on the balcony throughout. Lewisham Odeon (Where I Lost my Quirginity) Hammersmith Odeon Grounds of the Royal Naval College Greenidge Albany Empire
Saw one at the Crystal Palace bowl, that was a strange place.
Never liked "The Barn" Wembley Arena, the Albert Hall, Stadium and festival gigs and don't get me started on Selhurst Park.

As a lad, Malvern Winter Gardens - seen some great gigs there : Stranglers supported by Skids ; Motorhead supported by Saxon ; Rockpile - to name a few
Hammy & Royal Albert Hall are probably my favourite "large" venues, although the Roundhouse & Jazz Cafe are venues I've appreciated in London too
Down here on the South Coast I like the Brook in Southampton & the Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea
But there's nowhere I dislike more than the O2 Arena in London - the enormous barn just sucks all the energy out of the performance, no matter who is on stage - the only exception in my experience was Monty Python, funnily enough

If it's the same one anyway. 1977, a wee club called Clouds in Edinburgh. I think we just queued up and paid at the door. Those were the days
