Along with Megadeth and one or two others, Metallicas 80s catalogue defined thrash one on hand and transcended the genre on the other. Undeniable classics in the 80s, both Tallica and Deth made landmark albums in the early 90s that re-positioned the thrash masters as more mainstream heavy metal stars with hints of their thrash past.
I think Tallica could never follow up the enormity of what the Black album morphed into. Almost three years of touring, over 20 million sales, it was a genre and era defining classic so huge that following it up became years-in-the-msking subsequent albums that split the fanbase and metal community.
Load/Reload has great material but has s surplus of bland, generic material. They could not compose this new brand of southern influenced, greasy groove alt rock quite as well as they could thrash.
St. Anger is one of the most divisive albums in rock history, ditto Lulu. Death Magnetic was a seeming return to thrash, but seemed laboured and while there are many strong tracks, others are a slog to get through.
The Black album deserves its place alongside Back in Black, Appetite for Destruction etc as a high water mark for metal. Metallica were never quite the same since, certainly not the visceral powerhouse that created the first three albums. Their music lost the edge; they could still come up with good material but arguably have not since come close to matching the earlier inspirations.

St Anger and Lulu aren’t divisive at all. As nearly everyone agreed they aren’t very good.
Metallica have been one of my favourite bands. Yes they have recorded music I’m less keen on but right up to their most recent album, I usually enjoy some of it a lot. Their 80s albums are maybe the greatest run of first four albums ever.
They also have the best entrance music in all of music.
