Ok, so some of us have probably met one, two or more members of our favourite band. I was lucky to shake hands with both GOMORR & WOMORR in a Dublin bookshop in Sept 2006 at a signing of their 40th Anniversary book.
But another brief meeting with a famous rock star happened to me by chance, again in Dublin, some 4 years later, in November 2010. Four of us, my brother and both our wives, were having a meal in a plush restaurant for my 50th. So the night was winding down and there were only two tables still occupied, ours and a table close by with two people seated. As I was facing the other table it gradually dawned on me who it was sitting there with a lady friend... none other than Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood!! His friend disappeared for a few minutes and he casually had a stroll around the room, looking at some of the paintings on the wall. Then she returned and they resumed their conversation. We thought it would be inappropriate to look for photos or autographs so left them to themselves. A short while later we finished up and made our exit. We walked by his table, where he looked up and said, 'Good night ladies' to our wives and nodded briefly at us! And with that we were gone, leaving Ronnie and his friend alone in the dining room. Certainly a memorable night out for us four!!
So, just wondering if any of you have had some close encounters of the rock kind on your travels?

Kind of similar, in that it wasn't a star struck invasion of privacy. Quite a few years ago when a minibus full of south coast Evertonians were trekking back from an away match (they all are to us!), possibly Norwich (?), we stopped at some country pub somewhere in the home counties for a couple of pints before hitting the road home again. About half way through my first pint I realised the chap having a quiet drink with his pal in the corner was none other than Ian Gillan. Nobody bothered him at all, but as we were leaving a few of us broke into the opening da da der da da de der of Smoke On The Water, just to let him know he'd been spotted. He seemed to be quite amused, breaking into a big grin & cheerily waving us on our way.

Had a drink with the Dave Lee Roth band minus David Lee Roth but including Steve Vai in the Preservation Hall in Edinburgh in 1988. Me and three friends sat with them at a long wooden table they had in the bar.
Got a peck on the cheek from Shirley Manson in the same place before she was in Garbage, in a band called Goodbye Mr Mackenzie.
Met Vince Clark of Depeche Mode/Yazoo/Erasure in Ripping Records in Edinburgh in 1987.
Bumped into Tom Hamilton and Brad Whitfield of Aerosmith on Princes St in 1989.
Struck out on any rock star meetings in the 90’s!

Apart from members of Quo, I haven't ran into that many but the one that stands out is a brief encounter with Sting in a hotel in Germany - after a Quo gig! He was playing the same night in Stuttgart (in the same venue but another part of the arena) and, unbeknown to myself and Mrs Mortified, he was staying in the same hotel we were. He wandered into the bar late on with some of his crew and no doubt management people or whoever. I was standing at the bar waiting to order and he came up and asked for a glass of mineral water. To the barman that is, not me I plucked up the courage to say "Good evening, Mr Sumner. Good gig?" To which he replied that it was. He looked at my t-shirt and smiled, realising no doubt that we hadn't travelled all that way to see him. In fact, Mrs Mortified can't stand his music whereas I've been a fan of his solo career since it began. But I didn't tell him that. "My wife thinks you're $hit" seemed somehow inappropriate and might have spoiled the moment We then went back to our seats. No doubt he was thinking to himself, "that's made my night" and told all his mates

Saw Lemmy playing the fruit machine (surprise, surprise) in a pub in Westbourne Grove in London. And the Wurzel and Phil Campbell in the 7-11 opposite Westbourne Grove job centre where I worked. Early days of the new 4 man line-up.

I can offer these 4 tales [!!!] 1. Rocker = Back in 2008 [i.e. BEFORE Rampant Financial Market Capitalism truly F*#%ed-up the planet] we were on a short-ish trip to Cape Cod/Boston. A few months before we went, I noticed that Kansas were on a Summer tour of small-ish outdoor venues. The place was not even a 'town' but it was in Mass. beside a Lake [with a real long unpronounceable name - like that place in Wales!!] so we'd hired a car and included that gig on our list of places to do.
All very relaxed and laid back, there was a support band on 1st playing Southern Rock-type covers - very good they were too. Then at the break between bands I noticed Billy Greer to one side talking to some folks so I decided to grab my [then 8-year old] daughter and head over that way. Just before we reached him he disappeared around into backstage but then I heard someone saying "Rich is around back" so we kept going. And there was Richard Williams doing a few photo's with fans - he's the BIG guy with the eye-patch, so y'can't miss him! - we waited our turn and approached him and asked him could we have a photo - he was real nice about it and noticed I had a 'Kansas Euro Tour 2005' t-shirt on and he asked "did you see us?" I said, "yeah I went over to London so catch you, actually we travelled over from Ireland for this" - he said "HUH?? you came all this way to see us??" - I said "yeah - of course... ah no, I'm only joking - we were here anyhow!" The photo is beside me as I write this! Nice!
2. Wrinkly Rocker#1 = Kinda like Quodec above; A long while back Ronnie Wood lived here in Co. Kildare [near enough to where I live] and there were always 'sightings' of him being reported [kinda along the lines of 'who hasn't seen Ronnie Wood?'] One night we were in a local Video hire shop [remember those?] and there were only 4 folks browsing, us 2 and 2 others - so having picked something to hire we trundled up to the counter and the other guy was there ahead of me, I didn't pay any attention to who/what he was - I just knew I'd be waiting 'til he was finished - which was taking a while - so I glanced over at him, at that moment he glanced at me too, only then I realised it was the bould Ronnie, giving me that "Yep - I am who you think I am" look - so I gave him my "Yep - I am who you think I am" look, too. And we went our separate ways, basking in each others' reflected glows!!
3. Wrinkly Rocker#2 = Along the same lines [this didn't happen to me - but it fits in nicely alongside No.2 above!] A friend of my wife told us this tale yonks ago. This friend and her husband were out having a meal and there was a 'famous' face also dining in the same place that night. So, trying to not make a fuss, this woman decided she'd wait til she was leaving before sidling up to yer man to say, "I'm sorry to disturb you but I just want to say - my friend thinks you're BRILLIANT, she loves you... sorry again to've disturbed you. Bye". She then proceeded to contact her friend and said, "eeeeeee!! you'll never guess who I've just met? and I told him about you being his biggest fan - ROD STEWART! eeeeeeee!!!" Turns out it was Ronnie Wood [again!] 🙄
4. Not a musician but, Famous?? - are you kidding!!??... There's a well known book shop slap bang in the middle of Dublin called Eason's [probably same place where Quodec got the 2 OMORR lads to sign his book?] and like most reasonably sized book shops they have authors in to sign'n'sell. One time I was in there looking for something [presumably - a book?!] - not attending a signing or anything, just browsing around. I was just about to cross from one aisle to another [cutting across a main side-way path out of the store] when I noticed coming from my right, and heading towards the exit door preceded by a bouncer/minder-looking guy [who was then to my left - so at that moment not minding his 'charge'] was an incredibly tanned Tony Curtis!! [Yeah, that TC!] I was amazed - so I stuck out my hand and said 'Hey, hiya Tony' - he stopped briefly, gave me 'that' smile and said 'Hey. How you doin" - and he was gone. Cool!
