I rarely post films I like on here because I know they won't appeal to most of you.
This is what I found good about Zone of Interest.
We meet this family, in the opening 10 mins. We see the father don a Nazi uniform and disappear into Auschwitz that is next door. A man delivers what we think is food and provisions in a bag.
In the kitchen, the women open one of the bags and pull out silk underwear. And if you know your history, you know they are the clothes of Jewish women in the camp. And they fawn over these clothes.
The wife, goes up to her bedroom and tries on the fur coat she's held back for herself. In the pocket, she finds a lipstick. She sits at her dressing table and puts it on. And then quickly wipes it off.
It is not the same as watching a documentary when you are being told information. While this is a fiction, it is asking you watch what this family was like and how they ignored or even celebrated what was happening over the wall in the camp. You saw nothing but the smoke from the chimneys. And you heard the screams at night.
Fine, call that arty farty. But I would not have felt so disturbed from a documentary.

...still an' all cg, I'd like to know what it is you like? you might be surprised at what we'd tolerate on here! Re: ZofI - different strokes for different folks I s'pose - I don't know ('cos I haven't looked into it at all) if it's a fictional or factual portrayal of Höss' family in the situation - so I can't 'park' whether those very emotive scenes you mention were true or 'designed' [not a great word there] to provoke revulsion - let's face it, revulsion about what those NSDAP crowd got up to is relatively easy to reach.
I dunno, maybe I just prefer documentaries [at least, the verifiable ones!] I'm always wary of what Filmmakers/Studios get up to with their biases and trying-to-mould opinions.
About the 'arty farty-ness' - single colour frames? night-vision scenes? VERY dissonant music backgrounds? I'll hold my hands up and say I had to google what they were supposed to mean (did you know what they were indicating/suggesting?) and having had to do that I reckon, yes, the film did stray into high brow-ism that (imo, added nothing)
Have a look at 'Night and Fog' or 'Shoah' and tell me you wouldn't be as disturbed?
Peace!👍

I must admit - and it's probably just me - I don't like being 'disturbed' by any film. And if I'm equally honest, I've been disturbed by very few. I can't seem to separate myself from what the medium actually is; a work of fiction. OK, maybe based on factual events, but still someone else's perception of it. A script and actors.
One of the few to make me curl up and wince with the very realistic violence was this one. Notwithstanding the fact it is a very good film indeed.

Wicked little letters. Enjoyed it with some laugh out loud moments. Olivia Coleman is excellent.
