... Like most Quo fans probably, the thing that irritates is the prominence of a synthesiser, or whatever it is, high in the mix on tracks like Going Downtown Tonight or I Wonder Why (just 2 examples) basically overriding what I certainly feel should really just be a guitar riff. This happened with increasing regularity from the mid-80's right up to the late 90's. I personally think it spoiled some potentially very good material. ... Couldn't agree more. I have the same feeling with Van Halen's 'Jump': I could never understand why one of the best guitar players in the world wanted to play those tinny keyboards. I still think it's a brilliant song, it remains a killer, but I just think that Eddie's guitar would have enhanced it. Took me by surprise as well. Always preferred Panama but I always do seem to like the lesser hits more. Not sure if that says more about me or the record buying public

Never understood why that track was re-recorded and the awful oh-oh-oh parts added . Plus it’s played at 100mph must have been good gear they were on at the time of the recording . Cheers It was rerecorded for money ,expected to be used to advertise Perrier water. It never happened But the extra oh-oh-ohs are already in Bob Young's solo version, which was recorded ca. five years earlier!

(Faded) Memory tells me that there was some sort of scandal involving Perrier at the time with regard to the mineral content of their water. And any advertising was pulled. Or maybe Quo pulled out. Something like that. Typical Quo though. Timing is everything

Talk about getting completely the wrong message over to the wrong market! If they were trying for irony, all they probably succeeded with was self-destruction

In fairness there’s barely been any prominent synth keyboards since Thirsty Work. Was probably cos it was new technology in the 80s it got overused. Godawful whitesnake comes to mind

For some reason, they ditched that synth driven approach for Rock 'til You Drop and the consensus of opinion is that it's probably their best album of that whole period.

Talking about keyboards...
Alan was veering dangerously close to the Les Dawson school of piano playing near the end!
...and now Andy B showing them how to it with a bit of showmanship! Forward to about 1 min mark and also the 2 min mark.
Possibly still have a recording of this performance at Pebble Mill on VHS in the loft. The days of having to set the TV and Video recorder up on the timer before going off to work and hoping it would record what you wanted.
Andy's antics made me laugh that day and again just watching it now after all these years.

Godawful whitesnake comes to mind Don't Stop still had some of it. But afterwards, thankfully consigned to the dust bin of history. I've always maintained that synths in a Quo context tended to work only with darker, minor key songs such as End of the Line or Man Overboard. I'd say that Perfect Remedy already showed the way back towards a more guitar based approach. Even RTYD wasn't free of it though, as the song we're talking about on this thread shows. Other example: Fame or Money.

Even though I prefer guitar based Quo I normaly don't have a problem with synthesizer in rock music. The problem with the synthesizers for me is the sounds he used, often a little bit cheap and plastic compared to other bands. But I'm not very keen to Rossi's tone after 1976 either, was it when he started to use a solid state amp?
When playing piano or hammond I think Andy does a good job.

I liked the guitar tone he and Rick had during the 90's Live Alive Quo, Knebworth 90
