TV miming aside Andy's piano work on this is stunning. I know keyboards divide opinion for many Quo fans but the band are damn lucky to have a player of such ability and versatility. There are fewer and fewer about.

Andy adds poppy keys through the song I've never blamed Andy for things like that , perhaps unfairly I put it down to Francis. Lets take something like figure of 8. Was it entirely down to Andy to come up with those sounds ? Bridges ? Then again I don't know. Last time I saw "lite" he had added a lot of keys to Big Fat Mama. I'm more inclined to think that was Andy's own doing I sometimes think Andy wants to put his own stamp over everything. I take your point but it doesn't always feel lucky 😆

One was Rick's failing health that he simply didn't have the energy to be the rhythm machine he once was and secondly after the second FF reunion tour his enthusiasm for regular touring had just gone and he wasn't putting the effort in. But as I say the addition of keyboards is a personal matter, some like it some don't. I was talking from a musician's point of view. Nowadays there are very few players with his level of ability, modern players have been spoilt by computers and synthesizers covering for very average talent.

Never understood why that track was re-recorded and the awful oh-oh-oh parts added . Plus it’s played at 100mph must have been good gear they were on at the time of the recording . Cheers

I agree Andy's a great musician, I just don't always feel his contribution was always sympathetic to the "Quo Sound", I'm talking '77-'81 really. Although it can't be easy to join an established guitar based band as a keyboard player, maybe even harder for Andy as Quo themselves seemed to be changing their sound somewhat in the late 70s. So it could be he's doing exactly what the band have been wanting him to do & I'm sure they'd say if they weren't happy with his contributions. I reckon the guy who joined Blackberry Smoke, again a keyboard player joining a guitar based band, has done a good job in augmenting the sound of the band but not really changing it. Which is, presumably, what he was recruited for.

I'm no musician - far from it - but I don't mind piano (honky-tonk or otherwise) and I really like that Hammond sound that pops up occasionally. At least I think that's what I mean.
Like most Quo fans probably, the thing that irritates is the prominence of a synthesiser, or whatever it is, high in the mix on tracks like Going Downtown Tonight or I Wonder Why (just 2 examples) basically overriding what I certainly feel should really just be a guitar riff. This happened with increasing regularity from the mid-80's right up to the late 90's. I personally think it spoiled some potentially very good material.
Basically we're talking about the arrangements of songs I suppose. This will either be a band decision or one for the producer presumably.
Andy's playing on the song here is superb. And I can think of many songs on which he has actually improved things with his contribution. Just one that stands out is Any Way You Like It from Quid Pro Quo. His playing makes that song. Gives it an identity all of it's own.
A wonderful musician who adds not just keyboards but guitars, harmonica and vocals. And we all know his instrument of choice used to be the bass.

I have the same feeling with Van Halen's 'Jump': I could never understand why one of the best guitar players in the world wanted to play those tinny keyboards. I still think it's a brilliant song, it remains a killer, but I just think that Eddie's guitar would have enhanced it.
