I have read many times about Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton having Marshall amps on the back line cranked up to maximum volume. On one hand (from my limited knowledge as a pub band guitar player) I know that “in-house” PA systems didn’t exist back then. And bands would have all the volume for the auditorium coming from the stage. Quo had the wall of death for example.
But I am suspicious that whoever is writing these articles in Classic Rock or wherever, that they could be exaggerating for effect.
In some pubs I’ve played in, I haven’t had my 75Watt amp past about 3 on volume ( whoever makes a comment about the volume going up to 11 gets booted out of the forum!) I did turn it all the way up once at home to try it out. I can attest to it being unbelievably loud. The kids were downstairs watching YouTube and they couldn’t hear a thing. The floorboards were vibrating. But then you have Brian Johnston and Pete Townsend with hearing problems so there must be a bit of truth to it.
