I know Rick had different musical tastes but when I listen to Backbone I can’t help but feel Cut Me Some Slack would have been a favourite and I can so imagine him getting stuck into the rhythm of this live.
Any thoughts ?

My initial thoughts on 'Cut Me Some Slack' had been that it reminded me of 'Reality Cheque' from QPQ. A Mr Richard Parfitt connection straight away!

I love the song and think it's the kind of thing that's now more necessary since Rick isn't around anymore to give us songs in that vein. Only complaint is that Francis' vocal sounds a bit too laid back for me, it might kick more with more upfront vocals...

If you mean that it's too far back in the mix I have to disagree with you on this one. The thing for me is that I strongly prefer the vocals being a bit further back in the mix like it used to be on albums in the seventies and early eighties, it's one of the things I really enjoy on Backbone

Yeah i can totally imagine this one slowed down to around the tempo of the original ROLD on the Hello! album, with a bit more of a dirty groove and more of a more prominent rhythm guitar just thrashing out the chords, as opposed to what we get on Backbone which in the instrumental parts just sounds like the riff doubled up. I think Rick would have been in his element on this one. It's simple and to the point, a good approximation of classic Quo IMO, and as Victor said, partly achieves that by pushing the vocal back in the mix. I'm sometimes amazed by how Francis' voice still holds up after all these years.

I've listened to a lot of live versions of the song for one of my blog posts and it's amazing how different Francis' vocals are on them. But the best versions of them are better than the studio recording. I think I said upfront but I probably meant more aggressive, with a bit more edge.

Sounds like a lazy attempt to record a song in the style of a band long lost to us. The notes are there , just lack the feel and touch and production of a great band. The production is overly polished and Francis stopped singing with any feeling years ago. Listen to his earlier recordings and he could put real malice into his recordings. His vocal sounds processed and devoid of emotion. He may as well be reading a shopping list.

The discussion of Cut me some Slack actually made me go and listen to the Backbone tracklist again.
But alas i still don't find it compelling. Better, yes, not bad at all, yes, marks for effort, yes, but not compelling.
My favourite track remains Waiting for a Woman, which is the only one I tend to go back to. Liberty Lane has goodness about it. CMSS is just like ... Quo by numbers, built round one of those cliche catch phrases. Not saying it wouldn't work in a live set. Maybe with Rhino singing.
I like Reality Cheque. OK it's just another "Youre a useless woman" song, but it's kind of sly. There must be a few women out there who would have liked to ding Rick with a saucepan. Maybe that's why Lyndsey .... But the old b...... always wom then over again ...

I think it's cmss and WFAW I will go back to, particularly WFAW. I ended up putting the CD away after 5 mins, doubt it will be played again until album of the months comes around. Reality cheque is a fun song, a smile and reminder of what a bad boy our Rick was. I can't see any similarity to cmss

I very much like Cut Me Some Slack and it is probably in the Rick vein, as it were. It's similar to a Parfitt/Edwards composition of old. Nothing wrong with that. Quite the reverse. But there is something slightly forced about it. I don't think it's the composition of the song or even the arrangement of it. It's a good riff and the lyrics reflect what the song is about. Not sure what the very slight problem is. The thing with Rick was, he played like a demon sometimes but it always sounded natural and effortless. The opening riff in this one sounds like it's someone reading the music and playing from the page. The track improves after that and these little "ooh ooh's" throughout make it a great listen. I'm being over-analytical, obviously. But that's why we're all here, no?

I just love that opening guitar riff - I think it's the most exciting thing Quo have done in years. Perhaps the last time they've sounded exciting like this was Movin' On... and that was 2011. (By coincidence, that song had a much better drum sound/recording... but worse mastering.)
It's got shades of a sped-up Don't Think It Matters, too, and I know Rick was a particular fan of that riff, so... yes, I can imagine him liking Cut Me Some Slack. You actually do have to be "nimble" to play it.

CMSS? The standout track of 'Backbone' indeed, whatever you think of the Quo of 2019
