... Incidentally, Rorys new live CD is sterling stuff; Check Shirt Wizard Live '77. A hero to us here in Ireland of course, the first Irish rock star. Not many music fans from this country have not heard at least some of his stuff. In late 60s Lennon and Hendrix were big fans and supporters of Taste. Yesterday I recorded "Ghost Blues: The Story of Rory Gallagher", a British documentary from 2010. The tv magazine Humo claims that "Hendrix when asked how it felt to be the best guitar player in the world, responded: 'No idea, maybe you should ask Rory Gallagher.' " That is such high praise, coming from Hendrix, but I agree: I saw Rory for the first time in the summer of '82, and was blown away by his 2 and a half hours of incredible guitar playing. He was the greatest.

Live in Europe was the first Rory Gallagher record I ever heard. It was staggeringly good! He was always targeted as someone who never recreated the energy and dynamics of his live shows when it came to the studio and I tend to think that's largely true. I bought Blueprint on the strength of that live album but it just wasn't the same. And then Irish Tour '74 came out. Unquestionably one of the best live albums ever released in my view. The only studio albums I truly liked of his were Jinx and Defender. But everyone will have their own favourite I guess. Last time I saw him live was at Edinburgh Queen's Hall in 1986. He played for hours! Sadly missed.

Been enjoying Rory's Montreux 1979 gig a LOT recently, the first two tracks, Shinkicker, and Last of the Independents, in particular.
