Been a few years since I last saw John’s band. If I remember rightly it was the year before the first reunion.
The Plug venue is a sterile, shithole of a venue and provided the band pish poor lights and at best an average sound. I did wonder whether they’d had time to sound check.
It was a pleasure to see John play again. He has such a lovely drum technique. Swings a little, which sounds wrong but you know what I mean. Tonight I was reminded what power he has to, very heavy, the sound that the band he used to play with simply misses. He is and will always be the heartbeat of the classic Quo sound.
At times the band were very good, In my chair and Summer,Spring... being highlights. A Year is a great great song but here it was all a bit disjointed. How much better a lot of the classics sound without Andy or Rhino. For me the issue is still the vocals. Thankfully no one tries to do an ‘impression’ of one of the classic line up but the bass player sounds like a club singer doing his turn. Great enthusiasm and decent enough but songs like Juniors lose their power without Alan or even Ricks vocal. The other singer is canny and an improvement on the previous guy but it reminded me that for his faults, there is something about Francis’s voice that leaves others singing his songs, sounding, well just not right.
John plays songs he never played with Status Quo and adds a good mix to the set.
Overall an enjoyable evening. If Im honest there are better bands playing Quo songs but no other has the timeless heartbeat of the band.
