According to his website: John’s Kit
John now uses his restored Ludwig Super Classic Oyster Pearl kit & Zildjian cymbals which includes:
22" bass drum, 14" tom and 16" floor tom with a 14" Yamaha snare.
21" rock ride cymbal, 18" crash medium, 16" crash medium, 14" new beat hi hats, 8" inch splash & 6" inch splash.
John also uses Vic Firth sticks.

After the Ludwig kit, circa 1973, he changed to the black Premier kit (26” bassdrum, 14” or 15” tom and 16” and 18” floor toms). Before the RAOTW tour he changed to a mirror chrome Premier set (same sizes as the black kit) and to the NTL tour he changed to the yellow Premier kit (same sizes as before, but now also with a big timpani on his left and two smaller toms - probably 12” and 13” - pkaced over the hi-hat) Since he left Quo I have more or less always seen him with a dark green Yamaha set, probably with the sizes 22”, 13” and 16”. During the FF reunion tour he once again had a black Premier kit (someone adviced him to not use the old Ludwig kit). On the 2014 gig he also included a yellow tom from the 1981 kit

Does anyone know what he used the timpani for? Or was it a tribute to Bonzo who'd recently died?
Maybe the end solo of Don't Drive My Car?

He used it in his drum solo, not in any song. 1978-1981 he also had a big gong behind him, but I actually cant remember that he used it. Maybe for the last few strokes in BBJ?

Still have a snapshot in my memory of walking into Wembley Arena to find our seats in '81 and seeing JC's Yellow Premier kit up on the stage on the drum riser in the distance.
A wonderful sight to see for this impressionable youngster at the time. Yellow being a bit wrong...but yet so right!
