I know the riff gets the glory but, the bass line is absolute killer.
Listening to the MK Medley and it just jumps out at me. Classic Alan

That bass line helps to make mystery song the great track that if is. I have never really understood why Alan was so underrated and never got the recognition he deserved (apart from in Quo circles obviously) compared to bass players in other big bands of the same era.

Alan is a great bass player...
Like Francis, like Rick, like John, when you hear them play their own instruments, you know it's them That's the stand out for me. There are so many technically amazing players currently right now, guitar or otherwise but, the sound isn't unique to the player. A lot seem to just wanna cram in everything they know in one solo
With Alan, it was all about feel for him and that's what makes a song and a player.
Not to start the "old vs new" argument but, I don't think I ever heard Rhino play the basslines Alan did

Other than almost playing that bass section right, he was just playing the notes for the song, adding nothing extra other than a little run up during the end of the main riff again before the next verse. You can hear his parts better on the Out In The Green gig as you can hear everything but the fucking guitars

It's also a shame Rick never used whatever effects pedal he used on the original recording, though i guess there may have been a good reason for that.
This track has so many important nuances and details which make it great to me. Right down to the drum fills, and Spud's loose-but-tight style throughout. A unique classic bludgeoned to death live.

When you listen to 1981 and before, Francis, Rick, Alan and John all did things that were memorable, little runs and interplay. After then, well it is what it is. Average.

Whilst this is absolute fact, it comes back to that quote... "I tried to get Alan to play bass like The Eagles" and then Alan told him no chance. It does make me seriously wonder what went on... There is an interview on YT, from 1987, where Rick says, "Here's to Rock n Roll...Which we don't pl..." and then takes a sip from his glass of wine The same interviewer asks if there is a democracy in the band and Francis says, "Nah, we "vote on it" bahahahaha" and Rhino responds, I don't know, I'm not allowed to talk" Sad...

Well, the band never got the recognition they deserved, so it wouldn't be likely one of the rhythm section would get kudos. It took up to the Reunion for some people to start saying, actually, these guys were pretty good. Just one of those things.

People say Alan has a bit of a temper, but it seems he managed to resist wrapping his guitar round Francis' neck ... he should get credit for that. Eagles indeed ...
