To remember the notes for the strings in the order of thickest to thinnest... Elephants And Donkeys Grow Big Ears. EADGBE. I learnt it as Every Apple Does Go Bad Eventually! I like this thread. Good luck with it smq . I am tempted to get my old accoustic out of the wardrobe and revisit my folk singing days! When I got into Quo, I bought a cheap electric guitar and tried to progress to barre chords but never managed it.... Maybe I should have another go! My younger son got a Takemine a few years ago. He did very well teaching himself Oasis songs off youtube. Bit of a folkie myself these days viv! Some great acoustic/folk acts out there atm

To Quo or not to Quo...that is the question

Hi Smq I'm a drummer but when I first started playing guitar about 25 years ago I was told by the proper guitarist in my band to learn the 'holy trinity' of chords, as they called them (E, A and D) So that's how I started and it helped me learn quite quickly. I eventually then moved onto C and G. So that what I would suggest for a start. Once you've mastered switching between those 3 chords and changing the order you play them in you've got the basics of a song - examples I tried playing along to at first were 'living next door to Alice' by Smokie and 'Cherry Cherry' by Neil Diamond. They have the same 3 chords all the way in both songs but sound radically different. I hope that this helps, happy strumming. 🎸

I've heard that before going to a music shop to buy a guitar, you must be able to play some ditty to entertain shop assistants. They all love the intro to Stairway to Heaven.

If you even attempt to play the intro to smoke on the water you will be told to cease and desist immediately. Most music shop staff are now allergic to it.

Thanks again for the useful (and not so useful) tips and advice. Rest assured Charles that I won’t be attempting Stairway intro in the music shop! My guitar playing friend suggested it might not be the best move (even if I had a hope in hell of playing it).
Biggest problem I’m having is I can’t seem to avoid dampening the strings on just about every chord I attempt even though I’m trying my hardest to use fingertips. I’ve not got big fingers/hands so can’t see why I’m struggling so much! Any suggestions?

You might need to push your elbow forward so that your wrist can tilt over the fret board more, allowing your fingers to press down without dampening the wrong strings.... Good luck

smq, my cousin lives in Brighton and offers guitar lessons to suit any level. He is also a lovely, lovely guy. Offers Skype lessons too. He even toured with the Quo (as support band). True story! His name is Malcolm Troon, to be found probably through Google/Facebook if you like.

Have you played them?....NEVER buy a guitar without playing it. I had a Takamine G-series acoustic for a few years. Good guitar. Might be worth a punt. Go to the shop, take as long as you like, play as many as want. Choose wisely. You'll know when you've found it. Yes, that’s the plan on Sunday - head into Brighton and try them out. They look the most likely from the descriptions and reviews. My “playing” them is probably stretching it 😳! I will certainly attempt a few badly strummed chords but unfortunately Stairway to Heaven is still beyond me. Youngest son will be coming too and he can play quite well so will advise. Thanks Davy

So went with this one As I’m equally inept with IT as with the guitar, have no idea if this will work!
