AN Irish axeman who has been rockin’ all over the world with Status Quo is playing his part in trying to raise €15,000 for an Irish hospice.
Dubliner Richie Malone, who joined the British rockers after guitarist Rick Parfitt suffered a heart attack last year, has put his own big heart to work.
The father of three donated a guitar signed by himself and Status Quo to a Dublin family to help raise funds for a charity event.
A staggering €7,200 was raised via auction by the white fender telecaster signed by Francis Rossi, Andy Bown, John “Rhino” Edwards, Leon Cave and Richie.
The beautiful cream-coloured instrument was shipped to the winning bidder in the UK – a lifelong Status Quo fan – to help raise cash as part of the Remembering Flexy charity event, which donates all proceeds to Blackrock Hospice.
Richie, a Quo superfan himself, will also take to the stage in The Noggin Inn in Co Dublin on Saturday October 7 to help further the funds.
He will be accompanied under the spotlight by Irish blues legend Don Baker.
The Remembering Flexy charity event is in its 3rd year having raised over €23,000 in the first two years for the Hospice.
This year, Richie is hoping the gig, along with the guitar cash, can help pushed this year’s total over €15,000.
The Dublin dad said he was ‘blown away’ by the amount of money raised from the guitar auction and is looking forward to performing with Baker.
He said: “The outcome of guitar auction has blown me away. It means a lot to me that the sum of money raised will go to a very worthy cause.
“To play at the upcoming event means a great deal to me. It is close to home and I played at the first one in 2015.
“To get a chance to see friends and family while home from touring and also to play with the likes of Don Baker is an incredible experience.”
The Remembering Flexy charity event is in memory of Paul ‘Flexy’ Flanagan from Ballybrack in Co Dublin who tragically passed away from cancer on November 8, 2014.
