Never did though did they... Wasn't alive but, from what I've been told, heard and read, a band (Original or covers) only got a gig in this country if they done a Quo song. I honestly have never heard of that before and it would go to show their power and popularity in the music world in the 70s and early 80s Sure, they never did reach the heights of making it massive in America but, there are so many bands you could throw that at. I wouldn't use that as a measuring stick of success/influence/popularity etc

Never did though did they... Ruled my world! And I think they were at the top of the Rock world for a while. So what if they didn't break America. Their loss. The rest of the world appreciated their unique magic.

Well, there's a radio interview from 1981 on RTE radio, with Bono. They were discussing bands in this country and unsigned bands and he said that when U2 done gigs in the country, the promoters gave them gigs on the condition they done a Quo song! And he said it was the same for everyone. He made the point it was unfair because some bands might have something to say with their own music. 1. I'm Irish. I'm not English. 2. I've pictures of U2 setlists from their young days and Paper Plane is on them 3. He said it and two of my dad's mates, who were in covers bands in the 70s, said the same thing. 4. Just because you didn't originally know this, doesn't mean I'm full of shit or lying.

I accept just because I didn't know, doesn't make it incorrect. So what Quo song did U2 or the Hype cover ?

Caroline was written on it too but, I take that with a pinch of salt. That could have been Neil Diamond or some other song with Caroline in the title

Bono said it was 'pub owners' in rural Ireland, when they started out. Which I can believe. Just like to get a gig in the local pub around here in the 70s or 80s. You would be told to play Alright now or Smoke on the Water.

Rural Ireland in those days was every single county except for Dublin City, not including Dublin county

Geoff. I think it was Gary Glitter... apparently loved him as a small child. Now that is ironic.
