Found this by chance and it reminded me of my childhood in smalltown California in the 50s and 60s. It seems shocking when viewed now but I remember my parents behaving just like this, my mother was so shocked when a black family moved into our neighbourhood I was told to steer clear even though their children were at my elementary school and despite the fact that my mother was of native american heritage.

'Non negro neighbourhood'. 'They'.
Incredible really. Not Africans, or Jamaicans, but 'Negros'.

I presume that attempted promotion to help elevate the 'negro' population into the white fellas market would've fallen on deaf ears back then. Calling them 'them' and 'just like us' etc as if they are some type of other human is just so ignominious.
