Leaving aside the “going through the motions karaoke + the tomfoolery” that Quo has become…… I’ve never really understood why Frame abandoned his classic Tele set up with Vox or Marshall amps to first butcher his Tele and then buy this green “thing” that he now plays…… – his sound/tone over the last 10+ years is frankly shocking – a sort of blanket crunchy 80s heavy metal with a cheap distortion pedal that a teenager would have when they first set out….. Modern Quo has revelled in the “two Telecasters” legend and iconography to make their money……but it seems that the “Quo” Tele tones ( from Frame ) are a distant memory – replaced with a processed “buzz”…..it sounds terrible.... This is what's fascinating to me...
He uses a tubescreamer for solos. It basically pushes the mids and the valves in the amp. Countless guitarists use them but, no other guitarist sounds the way Rossi does. It sounds like he's using a fuzz pedal for the solos. That shouldn't be.
Although, his sound wasn't bad during the FF tours...Except when he butchered DWMT. My ears actually stung

Listen to the guitar tone from the EOTR video. As far as I am aware, the telecasters went into a Boss overdrive and then into solid state, not valve,AC30's. So much simpler and so much more pleasing on the ears.

His electric mistress and something else

You're right that Rick used a few effects, whilst Francis also a volume pedal. However, from the 81 tour programme, there was an advert from Roland and I think there was some rack units, including some overdrive modules. If it wasn't Roland/Boss then I would like to know what the overdrive sound was, because it was just perfect.

So much simpler and so much more pleasing on the ears. Think they could have been valves. They cleaned up well when played softer and when the volume on the guitar was turned down. Listen to the intro of 4500 times. Rick has a nice clean tone and then, he flicks the volume up on the guitar and it's a full beefed up, overdriven sound. If you crank up the channel volume on a valve amp, it gives a great overdrive sound. Slash doesn't use any distortion pedals, his sound comes straight from the amp's channel volumes cranked up
Although, God only knows what was going on behind the amps. Could have been overdrive units. I know Rossi used a compressor at one point. Would explain how he got so much sustain from single coils

Till about half way through I'm fine with this. The loremasters seem to have forgotten that Francis always arsed around with the audience, did silly things with the mic, pulled faces, skipped a few bars, etc.
Where it starts going wrong for me is where Francis stops playing the riff. And where he stops playing the riff for quite a few bars and seems to think the audience should be doing something instead . I have a feeling that is the point where I sat down. If you want the audience to do something, guys, lead from the front and don't stop playing ...
Some bands say - "do whatever you like as long as it doesn't f*ck with the gig."

I always assumed that the AC30's were valve ones but I do remember reading about how unreliable they were,so they switched to the solid state versions. The pre 86 equipment set up is sadly unconfirmed rumour and opinion.I wish that there was some definitive info on it from the guitar tech at the time or somebody else from the crew.Alan has said that Roland developed a bass amp set up for him in the early '80's,so I'm assuming that they did like wise for Rossi and Parfitt.

Doubtful. You can hear in the sound. There's quite a "sparkle" in the sound that only Fender and Vox make together

That is truly shocking. Karaoke at its very worst - mindlessly lacking in feeling and soul. Butchered versions of the same old hits. The singing is frightful.
I can't believe this is being allowed on the road.. doh

Laughable.
The fans who are told that they are being listened to are expected to fork out for that?! Totally lacking in quality and professionalism.

God... remember when Quo used to go all out with lighting rigs! whatever happened. The last time the rig looked any good, was the Fourth Chord tour set up with the Quo lights... Nowadays "Quo" as a whole are lazy with EVERYTHING they do and genuinely only care about the money instead of what it truly is about... the MUSIC! Honestly playing on stage in front of people is something else... I couldn't care less if I didn't get paid for doing it, the experience is amazing and the rush you get... unbeatable! But going and putting on the same old show where EVERY SINGLE MOVEMENT is rehearsed is fucking weak... compare the footage from recent gigs to any gig (excluding the FF tours) to anything in the past 7 years. Same exact movements in the same positions with the same colour scheme on each track... Only reasons I loved going to Quo gigs was because of always looking up to Rick, and seeing them live is something else... but it just gets tiresome seeing the same old, same old.
