How about before they became 'Status Quo' and were known as The Thamesmen. Smell the Glove was a classic album!

Check out "almost but not quite there", from 1967 when the band was known as The Traffic Jam (no Rick Parfitt). Don't like the song much but I really do like the instrumental bits - which hinted at what was to come... The BBC banned this single for being "suggestive"

I would like to have seen them revisit that one with RP when they were in their prime. It's not great as is, but had potential. Speed it up, lay down a heavy bass track and let Coghlan fill in the drums more.

Sorry about that guys, just wanted to read AQ opinion on them. Okay, fair enough. Mortified. Honestly, I like the song. It's a clever little thing that isn't anything great, but it doesn't suck, either. The others all have parts that are really interesting, that have a lot of promise, and then...yuck. This is what I said once about the difference between the FF and this Quo 3. The FF elevated songs. They took average songs and made them much better than average, and I think I figured out why, finally. They had attitude. They were loud and proud and fuck you if you didn't like it, they didn't care. Much of the last 3 albums really aren't very good songs, but damned if they didn't play them like they were classics, and so they turned out to be quite good in places. And then, they started caring about what people other than their fans thought, and you wind up with a band that takes really good material, such as much of QPQ, and makes it worse instead of better. The other 3 songs you asked about had potential, they even started to have some guts...and then the band backed off, because they didn't want to offend anybody. They lost their attitude. The only thing I will say in their defense is that since coming here I've seen a large segment of the old breed bash everything from BFY forward, that's five albums! In other words, for them the FF had started to suck, too, and it appears the boys just ran out of songs and ideas, and when they tried some new stuff because there was nothing left to mine of the old material, they were rejected. In that case, what were they supposed to do?

Beyond the official releases, I would urge any fan to get themselves a copy of the 1982 "charlie" full gig (AM - this was broadcast in full on UK radio so quality is superb. ) - if only to check out the development of 4500x since the Live! album.

You could play this on Beale St. and everybody would think it was written by BB King.

This song (and album) is fascinating to me from a transitional standpoint. This is the necessary mixture of what came before and what came after.
