A lot of people seem to think I'm talking about the obvious of his voice being harsher over time. Of course that's the case for everyone. I mean over the past 25 years or so he started doing all this deep vibrato pish and singing far more American sounding than what he did in the 70s and 80s. Nothing to do with health or age, he changed the way he sung because the rumour has it someone told him his singing had no balls.

Ffs Anyways yeah, I get what you mean. Sorta like the way he sang Wild One on Riffs and AAA on that dogshit album Aquostic

Someone who worked with them at one point or something from what I've heard.

Smoking is what did it I think, Ian Gillan smoked a lot that helped destroy his voice. David Gilmour while ok not a Rock belt it out type singer, gave up smoking in 1975 and his voice remained strong. Paul Rodgers another one who looked after his voice can still sing with a lot of power.

He started crooning a lot in his late days as one way of getting around his vocals failing - the evidence was on Bula Quo with songs like Mystery Island and also the way he sang quite a few of the Aquostic songs.
In the Quo hey-day his range was perfectly pitched between the nasal tones of Francis one side of the spectrum and the growl of Alan at the other. I think post 85 he missed having Alan besides him. Whilst of course he wrote closely with Rhino and they produced some decent enough songs within the many years, I very much believe that Alan brought out the very best inspiration from him and this was reflected in his singing.
There was a steeliness from Rick at the reunions that boosted his singing as well as playing - he had gone up a gear from auto cruise with CQ to full throttle with the reunited FF. There was a concentration there and lack of stage play acting from him that was conspicuous in its absence in contrast to the usual CQ jokery.

Wonder who it could have been...

If memory serves me correctly it was Rossi who mentioned Rick's singing had changed due to someone criticising him. XS All Areas book may be the source but I'll have to check.

That is how I remember it. I don't remember where, though.
