So Rossi's this,Rick was that blah blah blah blah...it doesn't matter. I've just played Piledriver the only way to hear it..from start to finish. This is what matters.4 blokes,a good crew,7 fucking great songs and the best cover they ever did all on the album that did all that I wanted it to do.Every solo makes perfect sense, the drums do exactly what they should be doing. What about the second solo in Don't Waste My Time..where the fuck does Rossi come from, under the music somewhere. What about Oh Baby then? The quiet intro and then fcuking mayhem, simple verses, blistering guitar solo and the slightly understated bit before the 'lets go fucking mental' riff. A Year,I always wondered when Page and Plant heard this and thought "I've got an outline for something that starts off quiet and ends up in blinding solo".What a song this is,you'll notice I've not considered whether Francis liked Rick, didn't even know who they were then. Unspoken Words?Anybody reckon Clapton,Beck,Gilmour or anyone else could have wrung that solo out any better than Francis Rossi.
Big Fat Mama and it's fantastic intro that is great and the Rossi bit with band straight in and then the surprise variation with the James Bond type echo bit and then the build up to the greatest example of rock music I've ever heard, what about "Gonna tell you woman either do as your told or you know I'm bring you down" BANG "Got a big fat mama and there's no one else around" What about John Coghlan on this,Keith Moon,Ginger Baker you reckon do a better job?I'd never heard a band do a crashing live type finish on a studio album before.Paper Plane not heard anyone do this ever a masterpiece of whatever it is.All the Reasons what's the point of saying anything about this one.Roadhouse Blues,it's funny that I worked out it was the curly haired bloke with the moustache who sung this he looked the type. The brilliance of this version cannot be overstated and it's not worth typing about.
In the end,and it is the end now,who really gives a fuck about rhino's tie,Rossi's thought process. It's the MUSIC that defines this band and this truly extraordinary album should be all you need rather than a post mortem about individuals. If this was the only recording they ever produced it would be enough for anybody.
