Some people deal with nerves and very difficult situations by smiling as a coping mechanism. It doesn't mean they don't care.
Its too easy to take smiles for pics out of context.
The problem with Rhino though is that by looking scruffy and attempting to smile he was giving out all the wrong signals, even though inwardly he probably was feeling very different. Yes, I am no applicant for tidiest person of the year, and I am a great supporter of daft ties, but I admit that I felt a bit glum at Rhino's shirt situation. He should have checked in with his mum first. I've been to all too many funerals these last couple of years, and yes you do try and have a smile and a chat, otherwise everyone would end up feeling like slitting their throats, particularly with younger people who have died of difficult illnesses. Standing on the sidelines and judging it not a respectable passtime. PS I noticed that none of the current band's partners are in evidence, though some of them must have been on friendly terms with Rick. I suspect this isn't co-incidence. Hassle limitation? I know we only see the photographers in the photos, but were some reporters around too.

PS did anyone notice Bob in the pictures? I wasn't sure, but I rely a bit on hairdos to recognise people now, it's a few years since I saw him.

I can't say too much at the moment except to say that I agree with Mrs F that the judgemental comments are not fitting. We all have opinions on whether this, that or the other was done the 'right' way but I don't think message boards should be used to slag people off when they are grieving. People do laugh at funerals. Doesn't mean they don't care...

I disagree with this , Rhino posed for photographs that he knew were for public consumption and he chose to do so looking an absolute mess, almost inviting criticism. Very odd, but it was inevitable it would attract comment.

Re: personal funerals, I commiserate Mrs F as, that has been part of my life last year.
I don't know if you've only seen stills of the band after they get off the bus or if you've watched any of the press videos of the event. I found one where the wives/partners get off the bus first. And then we see the band make their entrance. So yes, all were present and correct.

Totally agree with you, I wouldn't be surprised if they handed out press packs. The band that calls itself Status Quo arriving together on the tour bus looks like a management stunt , the show must go on etc, but bloody hell the state of them particularly the totally dishevelled Rhino , who couldn't even manage to tuck his shirt in, and that ridiculous rhinoceros tie , what the hell was all that about at a funeral? I don't actually mind that rick got a rock star send off...I loved how they displayed the tele..it was how they said it was private and stay away whilst all long planning for the ongoing publicity of the band...and using the 3 wives to get the pr.. And yes rhino was rude and disrespectful.

Just a quick note on Rhinos Tie.......Just maybe there was a personal connection between that and Rick...who gave Rhino his nickname, i only say this as many people do things at funerals nowadays to personalise them just look at music now played not so long ago that would have been seen as disrespectful by the older generations

Read about what Sellars did at his funeral At Sellers' request, the song "In The Mood" was played at his funeral, a tune that Sellars absolutely hated.Only his 2 old friends new this. When the priest in charge of the proceedings announced that "here is a tune that Peter held dear" and the music started Milligan and Secombe dissolved in a fit of giggling stared at by stunned and appalled mourners.

Rhino looked like he'd spent the night in a skip, what a disgrace he is. Only Andy looked like he was grieving out of the current band.

Sounds perfect to me! My brother in law wanted 'This Way Up' printed on his coffin and that's exactly what he got but I'm sure some of the other relatives didn't approve. Going back to Lozzer44 (welcome by the way) I agree there may have been a reason why Rhino chose to wear that tie .... maybe some connection to Rick? And as for him not looking like he was grieving, I disagree and think he looked awful but nothing to do with his choice of clothing but rather his haggard look and the bags under his eyes made it look obvious to me of his sadness.

John Coghlan - SMILING
Bob Young - SMILING
I suppose their smiles are more dignified, or something?
