A few words about the first gig of the UK leg of the LNOTE tour, this evening in Nottingham. Arena close to sold out by the look of it and a pretty lively audience, at least the front sections were standing throughout (yes, even in the premium front rows of expensive seating). My second row ticket got me close to the action on Richie's side, in the aisle so plenty of room to enjoy it.
Francis seemed to have recovered quite well, but obviously not fully. Most surprising thing was a setlist change! "Paper Plane" dropped from the medley in favour of "Slow Train", but then added as first song of the encore in addition to "Burning Bridges". No "Rock 'n' Roll Music" but Francis actually sang all the verses to "Bye Bye Johnny", can't remember the last time he did that. So overall the set was slightly longer than in Germany.
Full review to follow. Next stop Bournemouth tomorrow.

I still can't believe anyone could go see a band that didn't include Rick Parfitt and think they had seen Status Quo.

Haha! A full version of Slow Train?!
I expect it was the usual hilarious rubber chicken ending that we all love.

It was the "usual" ending to the medley using "Slow Train" rather than "Paper Plane". I thought it worked better having "Paper Plane" to open the encore, great song.

Yes Paper Plane was used last year in the encore. I think it works well. I also think it worked very well to close the medley instead of Big Fatty.
Perhaps it's just because Paper Plane is such a great song that it works anywhere? Apart from the EOTR, when I didn't like it sandwiched between Caroline and ROLD.

Hai All,
It's good to hear that Francis is back on stage. Let's hope he can also do the rest of the concerts. At therockdoctor Just_Cuz_13 ........I don't see you at the Heineken Music Hall in the Netherlands. Brussel was also great because I met Rhino, Ritchie and Leon. quojc There is also a photo on Facebook........somewhere ? Nice review and it's good to read this sort of stuff.
See Ya, "Will 'o' the Wisp" from the Netherlands.

Said it hundreds of times before, it's not the same without Rick. I've watched clips on YT and, no offence meant, Richie cannot play in any way like Rick. The intro to Caroline is lacking in power, drive and sound. As is Down Down. The shuffle part in the intro to WYW sounds off from time to time, Andy and Edwards cannot sing at all... It's just all a mess without Rick. Call me cynical but, I'm actually starting to believe that it was Rick, Alan and John that made Quo sound like Quo. It's not a pop at Francis but, there is some truth to it

I seen seen a more impartial review that at least acknowledged, thus band just aren't as good without Rick.

Thanks PF "Missing Parfitt's harmonising and closeness with Rossi on stage, they had made the best of a bad job and if truth be told, it wasn't a bad job at all." That caught my eye. Job notwithstanding, I've been missing the harmonising for a few years now, they seem to have let it fall off the lorry a bit.

Full review to follow. Next stop Bournemouth tomorrow. The first gig of eleven comprising the UK leg of the LNOTE tour saw Quo playing the ice hockey venue of the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham. It was a much different setup to the recent shows I attended in Germany, with this being an all-seated affair. The evening kicked off at about 7pm with the Lounge Kittens doing their thing, again quite a contrast to the accordion rock thanks to DRDW on the German tour! They play on safe ground with a set of popular songs and they worked the crowd to get decent reactions. It's always a brave move for a support band to play a Quo song and they included a full version of "Pictures of Matchstick Men" and a nod to "Whatever You Want" in their closing medley. Thankfully, their versions were so different to Quo's that they belied comparison! The main support band, REO Speedwagon, took the stage at 7.30 for their 50-minutes or so. It seemed a lot of the audience knew a lot of their material but it was the two big songs ("Can't Fight This Feeling" and "Keep on Loving You") that drew the best reaction. Again, the contrast with the German tour was stark and Uriah Heep did a better job of getting the audience involved. With the two support acts out of the way, Quo appeared at just after 9pm and it was good to see that all the front rows were standing from the start (and remained that way throughout). There was no chance to move forward as security was tight around the expensive premium centre block, but second row on the aisle just in front of Richie was a good spot on my "standard" ticket. Francis didn't mention his recent sickness and sounded a little throaty at times, but most wouldn't have noticed. Rhino had made the most of the couple of days off and was sporting a new shorter haircut. It was good to hear a changed set, with "Paper Plane" being dropped from the end of the medley in favour of "Slow Train", but then added as the first song of the encore in addition to "Burning Bridges". The lack of "Rock 'n' Roll Music" was no great loss and Francis actually sang all the verses to "Bye Bye Johnny" rather than the usual quick "Bye Bye" we've become used to. It was a solid performance to kick off the tour, with a big - if not particularly excitable - crowd (I'd estimate around 5000).

Rhino had made the most of the couple of days off and was sporting a new shorter haircut. That's all that matters then. Pity it wasn't Sweeney Todd.
