I saw youtube clips of the "reunion gig" in 85 that didn't feature Francis (Marquee). There was great cheering and applause when raotw was aired before the band came on. The audience were die-hard Quo fans.
Looking at the NEC and Milton Keynes videos, there seems little evidence of the song being in any way unpopular with Quo fans.
For many years now, the song has been very unpopular with hardcore fans.
What changed? I know it's been over exposed, but so has ROLD! I know there have been shed loads of dodgy daytime TV mimes to it....but then Caroline has also had the same treatment. Besides....the original recording hasn't changed (unless we count the remix!)
I'm sure there will be fans on here who will say they hated it straight away.....but I don't think most fans did! Or did they?
Any thoughts on the "rise and fall" of RAOTW ?!

No I didn't hate it straight away, although it never was a favorite either, back then I thought Hard time, Can't give you more, Let's ride, Rocker's Rollin and Hold you back were all far better songs. But since it was played so often, I got totally bored with it. Same goes for Whatever you want quite frankly and that one I loved when it first came out, but I heard it so often that it became boring. Somehow Roll over lay down has never become boring to me at all though even though that song was played lots and lots as well.

it's in the same category as WYW. its the one track that every non Quo fan knows and that's probably why some Quo fans might not like that. There a lot of people out there that will always criticise the band and always be there to stick the knife in but at the same time have never heard of 4500 times, BFM, Slow Train, backwater, Don't think it matters, Blue eyed lady...the list goes on. I personally like the track and I think the remix is even better. I'm sure it would've gone down a storm at the reunion gigs.

I gave my much of my own reasoning about this song on the other thread. There is though, I think, an element of revisionism about the song that has developed over a very long time. I have no doubt some were indeed disappointed with it compared to what had been released previously, but I only remember it being received very well when I started going to gigs. In fact right up to the EOTR, I never came across anyone complaining about it. There has been a long time to review the career of Quo as it has unfolded, and a combination of the karaoke style dumbing down over the years I spoke about in the other thread as well as becoming way over familiar with the song already years back are large contributors. That is in addition to those that found it too poppy and wishy washy when it was released. Maybe those who did find it like this stopped seeing Quo on that tour in 77? The one where I happened to join the ranks of the Quo army as it was then. There is no way of ever knowing

At the time it was released,it was a change from Quos previous output.
A bit poppy, easygoing, lightweight but quite a fun change.
But then it went tits up for old farts like myself.
For far too long they carried on in the same vein.
In short they lost the magic, quality, drive and sheer balls of what preceded.

Aye, maybe if we see them reunited with Andy next year ......

But then that's ROLD isn't it I suspect RAOTW would be better accepted if it hadn't been so popular "outside". But to the public, it was a great redefinition of the Quo sound, and they ate it up by the ton. (I don't think any of the royalties went to John Fogerty, which is a disappointment.) I like Fogerty, and I like ROATW. But it was always the song when I went to the bog. (Don't forget many gigs including Hammy have pretty good sound in the bogs.) That basically means, I like it, I like it, but I like a whole lot of other Quo stuff a whole lot better.

I wonder how many people thought it was their own song. There were some on the old board who did, just as there are probably loads who still think that.
