Edit: I've corrected myself with the Rangers thing. Getting me years confused. Of course they won it. I saw them do so at Easter Road in Edinburgh with a Colin Stein winner. Hoorah for me I remember Down Down getting to no.1 well. Surprisingly! Seeing I can't remember what I had for my dinner last night Standing in a school corridor at lunch time listening to the chart run down. Might have been a Tuesday or something in those days. Quo were sitting at no.3 the week before, so there was a chance. They were replaced by Ms.Grace by Tymes the following week. Short but very sweet On the Sunday, this sticks in my mind. During the chart show (Jimmy Saville? Not sure), Quo were no.1, Rangers were top of the league (they did go on to win it ) and my mum had made macaroni cheese for tea, which was my favourite. I said to my dad " life surely can't get any better than this?". He still laughs about it. A 17-year old telling him how good life is

That Life Gets No Better moment for me was sitting in my sister's ancient car, in the middle of a field in Wales somewhere, my sister just brought me a large mug of tea from the caravan, and the news that my missing favourite shoes had been found under one of the bunks. It was late on a Friday night, and on the radio was the Princes Trust gig from Birmingham. It went on till midnight. (Then I had another cup of tea.)

Happy Memories of when I first discovered Quo! And achieved at a time when singles sold by the lorry load, so Quo did well to claim a number 1 at that time. I think it was Francis that said a while ago, that he's been puzzled about what was so special about Down Down that led to it becomming number 1, especially as there as been more radio friendly singles like Rockin all over the world, Whatever you want etc. Just seems odd how Quo only had one number 1 with so many great singles. I remember thinking at the time What your proposin and In the army now both were going to go all the way. In the army now got excellent air play on Radio 1,just kept off the top spot by Madonna.

Aye, it was an achievement. Pete Townsend must have been pissed as The Who hadn't had a no. 1, still haven't. Incredibly, Elton John took decades to get a solo no. 1.

I was thinking about that too roadhouse. Looking at all those other great song titles that I remember equally well. What makes Down Down stand out looking at those tracks is that its the only angry song on that list. And then I remembered, wasn't it around this time, high unemployment, prices, energy cuts etc... Maybe it reflected how many people felt?? Though as mortified points out, only for 1 week!
