Bernie Frost's high-pitched backing vocals on albums like 'Just Supposin'...' and 'Never Too Late' come in for a frequent bashing on here, and fair enough in some cases. But...
The 'Blue For You' album also contains some suspiciously similar vocal parts on the likes of 'Rain' and 'Ring Of A Change' and they never seem to receive criticism. It's known from the Genesis potential vocalist shortlist that Bernie was a part of the Quo vocal sound on record at that time so the inevitable conclusion is that Bernie is responsible for the BVs.
Thoughts?

I’ve always thought that it felt like a reaction to queen with their multilayered vocals

He's not credited, so I doubt it's Bernie.
Bernie's first credit for BVs was the Rockin' album, off the top of my head, as his vocals are present on Dirty Water

I think the backing vocals on Rain are superb, classily done. On that song the style works perfectly. I've never really noticed them on ring of a change too much so I guess it doesn't distract.
On the FF reunions, I would loved it if Alan and Rick had done the proper BV in Rain.

Only 6 people credit on the album so more than likely it was Rick, Francis, Alan and Andy.
Never underestimate Rick's, Francis' and Alan's harmonies. They were very very good!

Considering Bernie Frost auditioned for Genesis in around October or November 1975, when they were recording the album A Trick Of The Tail and he was known, at the time, as a session player doing backing vocals and also as "a very important component to Status Quo’s vocal studio sound" (as you can read on this article (page 78)) and was also referred to, on Genesis's notes, as "Status Quo Ghost (Big Secret)", as you can see on this image left on a post on this forum, and also considering how influential he was on the backing vocals and harmonies post 1976 (when he started being credited), it wouldn't surprise me it was his influence on those backing vocals from Blue For You and also himself also adding his own voice to them. On Dirty Water you can distinguish his voice, but on the Blue For You album it's more difficult. Also on On The Level you have fuller backing vocals than on previous albums. Just not as high pitched. Songs like Nightride (during the outro) and the choruses of Over And Done and What To Do and, of course, the "uuuh"s on Where I Am. It also wouldn't surprise me if he was already there for On The Level.

Knowing that he was around since Piledriver, I don't think it's strange he was there. Maybe in those times he sang lower or they put him lower in the mix.
