Looks alright that for post-war south east England. Bordering on middle class No playing on bomb sites for young Richard here. 👍

Looking at the link reminds me of a walk I went on around the London area of Poplar. About 2018. And the houses in that area look very similar. I'd gone there to look inside this giant tower block, Balfron Tower, originally council housing, then empty before it was be privatised into luxury flats. They looked nothing like this marketing website to how they turned out in this link (I've selected the history page by the way to show what they used to look like. Back to 2018. As I was in the area, I went for a very interesting walk in a low rise council estate in Poplar which looks similar to the Elmbridge Estate in Railroad's link. The detail from the talk that stuck in my mind, was the thought and care they put into social housing. The houses were created into squares, with gardens at the front, to encourage social communities. There was a local community centre, local shops, a doctor's surgery and possibly other amenities. And it was all pleasing to look at. The tour guide made this point. This was 1950s, after the bombings and trauma of WW2. They didn't consult what people wanted, as the do now. But they thought of everything they would need for a decent quality of life. Sadly, I don't think those in charge think of the population this way.

Actually, that reminds me. When did council houses start to be called "affordable housing"? They use that expression all the time now and never talk about council estates. It's probably just me but that overnight change in language pi$$es me off sometimes And the invention of words like "trending" and "influencer". I really should get out more When I was born (and, no, I'm not telling when ) we lived in a pre-fab until I was 5 and my sister was born. Moved to a council tenement after that. I have great, if distant, memories of both.

One name - it begins with T and ends with R. And her govt was the start to the end of building social housing for renting.

Although opinions will vary It's funny; I could not stand Mrs T or her government and we had them for a very long time. But the ironic thing is, my mum and dad bought their council house for a knock-down price, sold it 2 years later and bought a new flat outright in a nice area of Edinburgh where my 93-year old dad still lives to this day. And it has become the legacy for me and my sister. Unless he outlives us, which is becoming increasingly likely! But I guess the idea behind the whole policy was to allow people to own their own homes (thus encouraging more Tory votes) but for councils to keep building so everyone was happy. A very flawed idea as we can now see!

A very flawed idea as we can now see! As I recall, one of the big flaws in the scheme was that councils were not allowed to use the proceeds to build more housing - a grave mistake, imo.
