The live version on the deluxe is *suspiciously* close to the album version. Backing tracks? For me a good song, takes a bit too long to get going, feels like a good Rick number. I can't hear Francis on it
As for the album, how many songs were written by Quo members for the album? Take away covers and solo songs I don't think there can be much
I've always had a bit of a love hate thing with much of the album.
Take In Your Eyes. It's almost sickening in its poppiness - at the time I was horrified by it (and appalled by speechless) , yet it's massively catchy and features a cracking solo
For me the best thing about the album is Francis guitar solos.
Army v BTB? I'd have to think about it

I hear Francis too. (And I'm pretty sure I've said this on another thread, some years ago.)
I like the album. Slightly different. Not very cohesive, but diverse.

Maybe Francis added some vocals. I can't hear his tele.
I didn't realise at the time that speechless was a cover. 3 of 4 singles not written by them...
Is Francis playing guitar on end of the line? Like overdose it sounds like a Rick solo track
What does sound like a fresh new Quo song is Save Me, like that one

I really like Overdose and the Army album in general but I have a fondness for Back To Back so I'll say it's better than the Army album.

Few takes / alt versions of both tracks from those sessions.

I like Overdose. Rick's vocals are excellent and overall I think it's a good song. Shame about the annoying keyboard bits. As always many post split Quo marred by unnecessary and annoying keyboards. Overdose End of the Line, Red Sky, Keep Me Guessing and probably Lonely are all quite good modern sounding Quo numbers, breaking from the mold but fresh and good enough to be considered strong enough tracks for a rock band of Quo's ilk. The rest, however....well, dire comes to mind.
I am also not convinced Frame plays some of these solos (esp End of the Line and Red Sky) - sounds more like Pip than Frame to me. Mind you I would say the same about Rick on Never Too Late - I am not convinced he plays the 2nd tele on some of those tracks and feel it was Rossi who played both parts to get the album done and finished whilst Rick was dealing with his family situation. Another topic perhaps?

Army is an album I liked very much at the time. It was way better than Back To Back for me. Not sure about 1+9+8+2. Close run thing maybe.
It hasn't really stood the test of time that well though. Some of the synth/keyboard intrusions (if that's what they were - you can never tell with Pip) were a distraction. Overdose is a prime example where they are used almost as the main riff in places. And they're pretty horrible on what has become the best song on the album with the passage of time.
I've nothing against keyboards; that would just be silly. But Quo only really started to use them, in my opinion, to properly enhance the music very late in the day. Probably Heavy Traffic onwards where Andy's brilliant use of the Hammond is put to full use. Thankfully, the days of things like I Wonder Why and Going Downtown Tonight are way behind us.
End Of The Line used to be my favourite track and I still like it. It's very Rick. It's also very 80's as was Quo's output at the time. As was most people's!
Nowhere near Quo's poorest album and in 1986, a welcome return. The politics of it all have only come to light since.

Overdose is one of the few tracks I like on that album. But most of the album is not for me.

Well… for me the slide had already started with B2B (GDTT?? Please!.. gimme a break!) so ITAN was just continuing that slide. Tbh I reckon I played the album maybe only twice and never again. Says it all really! Hated the ITAN single and I can only remember ‘Overdose’ vaguely. Thus it shall remain. 😉

For all the dross he ended up writing it's an absolute gem.
