I like it, it's quite clear the band we're not happy in this clip.

I find this song inoffensive but it's a strange choice for a TV appearance.

I always thought of this as a weaker Quo track and as such havent heard it in an age. Its actually held up well when compared with some of the later stuff. Enjoyed re visiting it but wont be rushing back to play it again.

I wonder if, reading between the lines of what's been said over the years about the 3 of them jostling for position with their songs and leadership of the band, Alan wanted to showcase one of his songs on TV for a change? Who knows, but he has been accused of being "pushy" - who knows if that's true or not.
In sympathy for the guy watching his band drift further and further away, and his songs seemingly becoming more and more at odds with the Quo formula as a result. Can only assume he put his family first with regards the move to Australia, which is a noble thing to do.
But this performance has an air of Rossi & Parfitt just letting him have it. They appear to be taking the piss a bit.
Never understood what Alan's getting at with this song though, is he advocating being tough, or not? The meaning seems a bit confused when you read the lyrics. Is he being straight-up autobiographical, or is it a bit tongue in cheek? Hard to tell with Alan sometimes...
"I know where I'm heading for I know what I wanna be When they asked me at school what I wanted to be That was all they got from me
I wanna be a big man, nobody putting me down I wanna be a big man
They say love is all you need But everyone needs to know If you look a bit tough when you talk about love I'm sure that love would grow
I wanna be a big man, nobody putting me down I wanna be a big man, yeah yeah
Look around, see if I'm wrong It's only a show for those who don't belong
I wanna be a big man, yeah yeah I wanna be a big man, yeah yeah
I know what I'm living for But there ain't no guarantee If I make a wrong move you could jump in my shoes And that ain't no good to me
I wanna be a big man, yeah yeah I wanna be a big man, yeah yeah"

rockonquo thx for posting. If I've seen that before. then I'd forgotten gav Agree with your comments. Rick and Francis look wasted. Rick looks like he doesn't like the song. As for the words, it's Quo. I think they make no sense, but I didn't really know what they were until I just read them.. Always liked the song. The SQMB had OTT criticism of this, largely from fans who did it to snipe back at FF fans. If nothing else, it's a great vocal. And yes, a strange choice of song to mime as they had two UK singles. Not sure what singles went out in other countries On the other hand, they mimed some other album tracks on kids channels, hold you back springs to mind

Unlike quite some criticism I have read about the song over the years I like it.

Francis has said on many occasions that Alan saw the band as more Hard Rock or Heavy Metal.
Having said that, Alan has written many tracks that are neither, so it's hard to tell who's telling the truth about things.

I think six of one and half a dozen of another has been spouted by all band members over the years. If I had to believe one of them I think it'd be Spud.

Truth is that is my very first listen after all these years and it's not as bad as many put it out to be. I can come up with real cringeworthy efforts but this isn't one of them. Having said that I'll not listen to it again.

I always liked this, still do. I like a bit of melodrama. Also I didn't know then that "big man" is a anthropological social position, not just a size. With horrible irony, Alan was ridden out of his shoes a small number of years afterwards. I wonder if his intuition was trying to tell him. I don't think he saw it coming at all.

Would have worked as part of a Rocky soundtrack album at the time.
I personally think Jealousy & I Love Rock and Roll are the two weakest tracks from 1+9+8+2.
Big Man isn't great, but as others point out, it's not the worst thing Quo have ever recorded, by some distance to be fair.
