Wouldn't it have been cooler if the Beeb had banned Quo for 'excessive aggression' like the Who's lifetime ban they got, rather than for their 1990's 'product' just being a bit, well, boring & shit. 🤔😉
Was it actually a publicity stunt? Probably! Cost the band £50k in court fees, approximately a days' worth of 'ching'.

One of, if not the lowest point in the history of Status Quo...

I remember that appearance by The 'Oo on TOTP. I was 16 and thought it was les balles du chien I'll be honest, I didn't know they'd been banned after it. A feather in their cap, I'd say. Not a BBC lifetime ban presumably because I just watched them in concert at the Roundhouse on BBC 4 the other week. I bought the single but not the album. Thankfully. I've heard the album since and it was bollox As for the old Beachboys collaboration, not my thing really. That's me being polite by the way

All a stupid publicity stunt by David Walker that backfired and made them look ridiculous. Ironically, I think they had a valid point to make. Decisions were being made by the BBC and Radio 1 based purely on age. And very possibly the personal tastes of one or two climbing their way to being a producer on the Breakfast Show slot. The problem was, Quo - or rather Mr Walker - chose a really lame single to use as an example. Imagine if they'd tried this with something like You'll Come Round or Two Way Traffic later. It may have had a bigger impact. Maybe they wouldn't have had to pay costs

What an embarrassment the whole thing was. Seeing Rick standing on the steps of the BBC looking sad in front of all the cameras was absolute gold for Radio 1. Sad old men who deserve to be pensioned off. And I'm afraid they did need to. Radio 1 was absolutely spot on to ban that type of sh*t from the airways, but it didn't stop the begging postcards from the fan club: "Please go out and buy Fun Fun Fun to get it to number 1 and show Radio 1 how wrong they are." Mmmm...here's another idea...how about getting the band to actually release something decent that we would want to buy instead?
The weird thing is that I was just 24 when this was going on and Quo were old gits to me too. However, looking back (I'm 51 now), Francis was only 47 at the time!!! What the f*ck! Why were they acting like old men back then??!

The initial reasoning for the lawsuit was due to Quo not being paid for their appearance at the Party In The Park show, in August 1992. BBC simply didn't hold up their end of the deal and it pissed the band off.
It was David Walkers idea to sue over radio airplay instead.

BBC simply didn't hold up their end of the deal I think Francis said exactly this in an interview a few years back, but I guess the lawyers didn't feel it was documented sufficiently and thus insufficient grounds to go after the beeb for breach of contract.

The Beach Boys duet cover song is awful i don't blame the BBC for not wanting to play that song which is a crime against music and the rest of the 90's output was Jeff Goldblum said in Jurassic Park "That is one big pile of shit"
