I found this amazing website which lists old record stores in the UK. I couldn't remember the name of mine but luckily it was named after the road it was on. Railton Records. I can't find any photos of the shopfront though. Here's a link to the archive. Covers all the UK. www.britishrecordshoparchive.org

Oh, I remember Bruce's, 4th Chord . That takes me back 👍 They eventually opened more shops, one on Princes Street and another on Shandwick Place. They were in direct competition with Virgin who had a shop in Thistle Street (where I bought Hello! on the day of release) and then another on Frederick Street. Before they opened the megastore on Princes Street next to HMV. So many record shops in those days. As you can tell, they were my second home Little bit of trivia; Bruce's was founded by Bruce Findlay who went on to discover and manage Simple Minds. Further record shops that always got a visit were Phoenix on the Royal Mile, The Other Record Shop on the Pleasance, Katie's Record Bar at Haymarket and Sweet Inspiration at the top of Morrison Street (where I bought Quo and If You Can't Stand The Heat). There was also a store called Jeffrey's on Bread Street. That's where my mum bought me the In My Chair single. I did a lot of walking in those days

Yes I remember the local one in my town. It had records downstairs and music instruments upstairs. I would often go upstairs to read sheet music lyrics from albums. That's how I learned the lyrics from Quo songs that were not on the albums!

Harlequin Records in Oxford was great for cheap imports, Quo stuff on A&M and Capitol, German singles with picture sleeves.
Got my early Ramones, Saints, Dead Boys and Talking Heads stuff there as well.
Listen In Co/The Music Box in Didcot and Wallingford were the local mainstream shops.

Magpie Records in Worcester, Revolver Records in Leicester, Ross Records in Portsmouth all leap into my thoughts as I look back at my record buying in my teens & twenties

All gone here. There's an overpriced vinyl store in the touristy part of Greenwich, they have a fcukin Yes album, who'd buy that crap.

Bruces in Falkirk which later became known as Sleeves was my go to record shop back in the 80's-90's where i spent a lot of my YTS wages, we also had Binky's mainly 2nd hand and Orbit records as well as Virgin and Hmv.

This was 'my' record store back in the seventies in Holland: in the basement of an electronics and appliances store (they closed the basement section in the late 80's when CD's took over). I used to go there every week to check out the latest album releases. Bought most, if not all, of my Quo singles and albums there. They even used to put one aside for me when they received them. Those were the days: the excitement of looking forward to hearing a new Quo record still makes for terrific memories.

In Southend we had HMV, which is still here, but in a different place. In the 70s we had WH Smith's and Boots, where I would get my albums from after listening to then in one of the listening booths. I would usually make some excuse to finish work early on the day before a Quo album was released, as around here and no doubt in most record stores, the album would be on sale on the Thursday afternoon's the day before the official release date. I would listen to the whole album before purchasing it!

Well I have no recollection of Bruce's Record Shop, so it must have been gone by the time I was purchasing music in Edinburgh in the early 90s. For new releases I'd usually go to the big chains, HMV & Virgin on Princes Street. But for buying up the Quo, and assorted other bands, back catalogue on vinyl, it was Hogs Head, Record Shak, Avalanche, Ripping Records and then Vinyl Villains as I made my way from South Clerk Street down to the top of Leith Walk.
With the exception of Vinyl Villains all are sadly now gone, though someone has tried resurrecting Avalanche in Waverly Market, though seems more t-shirts and tat than actual records.
Nowadays my music is more a solitary experience on the computer as opposed to the fun of going out with a group of friends round all the shops trying to find a bargain, or discover an unknown Jem.

....someone has tried resurrecting Avalanche in Waverly Market, though seems more t-shirts and tat than actual records. I noticed that. When I was trying to get two Quo releases on Record Store Day a couple of years back, they were touted as having them. They didn't and never did have And neither did anywhere else Apart from a shop on Cockburn Street but they were sold out. Can't remember the name. You're right; loads of t-shirts and assorted tat in Avalanche. As with these new HMV shops. Actual music seems to take second place. Which suggests these outlets are trying to cover all bases. Doomed to failure of course because vinyl in particular is a current fad. It'll pass because like all fashions, they've saturated a limited market. Fopp is the go to place for me these days if I want a physical browse.

Thanks mortified for reminding me about my record buying now. I use Fopp too. Though I think it's been bought out and is no longer an independent.

Something tells me they have links to HMV but I can't remember why I know that. However, as a record store, they're close to the best around. These new HMV shops are hopeless and are just playing at it.
