The Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers album Songs and Music from the Motion Picture "She's the One" features the track twice: the opening track Walls (Circus) - which I think seems to be the same as your first track, as far as I can tell, and near the end of the album there's your second track Walls (No. 3) I thought I was the only person who knew that album! I bought it when it came out, after watching the film and enjoying the soundtrack. There are some excellent tracks on there! Back to the original question, I very rarely listen to the lyrics of any song by any band (perhaps Floyd being the exception). I only found that Tom Petty soundtrack album fairly recently. I can't even remember how. I was never a big Tom Petty fan but was blown away by the album, Hypnotic Eye, and I think I must have heard another song somewhere and tracked it down to the soundtrack. I then realised I had quite a large back catalogue to catch up on!

It's funny because that soundtrack is the only album I've got by Tom Petty, and as much as I love it, I've never felt tempted to buy anything else by him!

Tom Petty is one of those artists where I know a fair few songs but wouldn't say I'm a fan as such. I did buy 'Full Moon Fever' back in the day. His 'classic' tracks are probably: Certainly a talent.

4th Chord, I'm very familiar with that performance of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, which is stunning. I've always been a big Prince fan (first CD I ever bought was Lovesexy) and his musicianship there is off the scale. Going back to Tom Petty, I first encountered him when a mate of mine saw him support someone way back in the late 70's (Nils Lofgren I think) and raved about him. So I grabbed the debut album. I didn't like it at all, so never explored Mr Petty's work after that. Then I heard Hypnotic Eye and this track in particular. Believe it or not, it reminded me in places of Cameo's Word Up, which I love, so I investigated further. Glad I did

It's great to know some Tom Petty fans on board, been a fan since the Learning to fly came out in the 90's i think. Gotta give She's the One a listen, haven't heard it.

Thanks, I knew those songs without actually thinking / knowing that they were him. Of course, I know Free Falling, I Won't Back Down and his Wilburys stuff too, but it appears that he's had more hits than I realised and I really like his sound. I think he did the voice of Lucky in King Of The Hill (anyone remember that?).

I bought a compilation album (I have those for bands that are good, but not great: U2, Bon Jovi, Europe, ...) only for this song:

Creeping Up On You is a case in point. I liked the track (still do) because it drove along nicely, but some of the lyrics made me wince, especially when plagiarising Jerry Lee Lewis, which I presume was deliberate. What was plagiarised from the Killer?

What was plagiarised from the Killer? It's an homage to this track by John Lee Hooker. I love the way you walk I love the way you walk I'm crazy 'bout your walk I love the way you walk You my babe I got my eyes on you I like the way you switch I like the way you switch I like the way you switch I like the way you switch You my babe I got my eyes on you You got dimples in your jaw You got dimples in your jaw You got dimples in your jaw You got dimples in your jaw You my babe I got my eyes on you Well, I see you every day Well, I see you every day If you need to look Well, I see you every day Well, I see you every day You my babe I got my eyes on you · John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1917 – June 21, 2001)

I've just discovered that Dimples was a hit for The Animals in 1964. I wonder if Rick and Rhino (co-wrote with) were inspired by this version. The lyrics are more like creeping..
I love the way you walk, Said I'm crazy about your walk I love the way you talk When you're talking that talk I love the way you walk You're my baby, got my eyes on you.
I see you every day In your neighbourhood I see you every day Woman, you sure look good You know I see you every day You're my babe I got my eyes on you Well I see you every day
Walkin' up and down the street You got on your high-heel sneakers, baby And you sure look neat Well I said I see you every day Little baby I got my eyes on you
Well you got dimples in your jaw You got dimples in your jaw You got dimples in your jaw You got them dimples in your jaw You got dimples in your jaw You're my baby Got my eyes on you
Well, I love the way you walk Said I'm crazy 'bout your walk I love the way you talk When you're talkin' that talk I love the way you walk You're my babe I got my eyes on you ...

What was plagiarised from the Killer? I didn't know about the John Lee Hooker song, so that one is new to me. The chances of Rick knowing the song aren't that great, although Rhino might well have. I was thinking more about the " wiggle when you walk, giggle when you talk" stuff, which is ever so slightly reminiscent of Chantilly Lace. That was the song that came immediately to mind when I first heard Creepin'.

The similarities between two songs are too big for this to be entirely coincidental. I was thinking more about the " wiggle when you walk, giggle when you talk" stuff, which is ever so slightly reminiscent of Chantilly Lace. Although it's a Big Bopper song, I think the Jerry Lee version is more well known. Certainly over here. But I guess the bottom line to what we're saying is, Creepin' was heavily influenced by something specific. Lyrically at least.
