Now, being a Quo fan really does throw up some surprises. Here is another one. This is the 1980s group Haircut One Hundred at Shepherds Bush recently. Their opening track is not some cheesy 80s number either. How very odd!

Great find. And it did make no 1, once upon time. A few folks must have liked it. But yes, also unexpected rather than weird.

Fair play, and I always like a bit of Low Rider by War.
I was always more likely to listen to Quo and Stax than Hawkwind and Yes.
And Haircut 100 were by no means a "bad" band, made some good singles IMHO.

That is just nuts! And great! Who'd have seen this coming? As you accompanied your 80's chick spouse just to keep her company Eh, surprise! I liked Haircut 100. They released great singles. A talented man, Nick Heyward, and his (relatively) recent solo album, Woodland Echoes, is excellent. Doesn't he look well?

Exactly. Caroline works best. I still prefer Junior's Wailing

I have just had a listen to Caroline (1977 Lewisham Odeon, live) and Junior's Wailing (FF Reunion).
I can see why Caroline is so loved as an opener, it has a good long but repetitive musical intro to whip up energy and enthusiasm (as if that's needed) for when the verse comes in. But JW gives me goosebumps and is far more exciting and variation musically. And the intro is brief compared to Caroline.

Junior's Wailing, the way it was played live in the 70's, had a terrific intro. They didn't mimic the Ma Kelly version and I was surprised (and just a teensy bit disappointed, I have to reluctantly admit) they didn't play it that way on the reunion tours. I don't actually know why.

I hear what you mean mortified - this is the only 70s version I've heard. And it has that same way of building the opening intro (not the same chords!!! in case any thinks I mean that) that Caroline does.

The live EP version from 1975 is the same, curiousgirl. Rick hammering those tramlines of his. Best starting song to a gig ever in my ever so humble.... Like I say, why they didn't start it that way during the reunion beats me. But there was maybe a legitimate reason. Maybe they just forgot

Maybe they just forgot I was only thinking this yesterday, after 10 years, that the two disappointments for me from the first reunion gigs were the start of Juniors Wailing and the second song not being Someone's Learning. The disappointment from the year after was that the set-list change was minimal (although why I was surprised by this I will never understand). That start of JW pre-77 was a thing of pure crude beauty and impending power. As a little oik, the first time I experienced it, it really was shock & awe. Every time afterwards it was pure expectation and ecstasy. What a band.

Maybe they just forgot Way back in 75, when I first experienced the power of the shuffle, the start of Juniors Wailing blew me away, I still feel that pounding in my stomach... I have a weak weak theory about the missing intro in Juniors, as well as the omission of the jig in Roadhouse when the reunion came... I believe it spells Rossi. I know... not halal, but it's my theory...
