I suppose double albums hark back to the heady days of vinyl, although because of the increase in sound quality I think many vinyl reissues, which were originally only single albums, are now double. I can't think of many studio double albums that I used to listen to. Physical Graffiti springs immediately to mind as one that I did. Exile on Main Street is another. I think that's about it. Off the top of my head that is. All the others were probably live. I was probably discouraged by the fact that I'd have to physically get up and turn the record over 3 times. Added to the fact I'd have to put it on in the first place then take it off again at the end. Having to get my ar$e off my bed as a teenager as much as 5 times was beyond reason in my book. It's probably why I collected so many singles

Not really sure why. Probably because I didn't know how many vinyl records it had. I did play it a lot though.

Sting's ...Nothing Like The Sun album was released as a double album on vinyl, even though it was just shy of 55 minutes in length.

My favourite double album would be Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. It just seems to work so well as a collection of songs, to my mind anyway.

Same exile on main street. Got into both via streaming. Can anything be a double unless it's double on vinyl?

As I recall, that's exactly what happened with ELP's Welcome Back My Friends...... triple live album

Not sure how common double CD's are/were. Apart from the new deluxe editions of course, which often run into 3 CD's.
Sign O' The Times was certainly one but I think it's the only one I owned apart from Quo Live when it was first released on CD. But this is all from memory. All my CD albums apart from Quo's are sort of in storage (i.e. in another house too far away to access easily).
CD's were still called albums but double CD's were also just called, erm, albums I think. For some reason.
I can remember more double albums that I didn't listen to than those I did; Tommy, Quadrophenia, The Wall, The Beatles, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Out of the Blue, Tales from the Topographic Oceans, anything by Rick Wakeman and all manner of prog stuff.
The majority of live albums did seem to come out as doubles though. I personally always thought the best ones didn't.

Iron Maiden's latest was a double cd. It is almost 82 minutes of sheer brilliance.
