Got this along with Heavy traffic deluxe today. Its the first time I have listened to it as a complete album for quite a few years. Out of the three covers albums they did however popular or unpopular they were this is the best one regarding the mixes everything being high up there. Unlike the predictable rock n roll of the previous covers album this one is slightly more experimental without being too far out of their comfort zone like for example on Don’t stop. The re recordings were standard as a selling point for casuals with a bit of incentive of a new Junior’s wailing and dustpipe for the main fanbase? The versions of the songs mainly stay faithful to the originals and even covers of covers like I fought the law and all day and all of the night basically sound like the Clash and Stranglers versions but not sure if this was intended? Don’t bring me down is too pedestrian and Rossi sounds half asleep.Centerfold is a bit of an oddity here and could have been a track they may have considered for the diversity of Don’t stop and maybe a track John Edwards liked and suggested hence he sang lead vocals?
The band sound like they are going through the motions a bit but not sounding terribly bored at the same time and some decent playing especially matt’s drumming on Wild one and Rossi’s riffs on Takin care of business my personal favourite track ftpm the album. Regarding the expanded package the 2004 singles and b side are included and think the remixed version of thinking of you has been on album? The live cd is decent and probably overdue from this era. One the whole its one for Quo completists and maybe won’t get aired much by many but probably the best of the covers albums they did as a whole album.

I know I’m in the total minority but I really like Riffs. I thought the overall sound was better than on Heavy Traffic . For example I love how the guitars sound on On the Road Again. I suspect that the main problem was it was a covers album too far . I do wonder had it come before Famous if it would have been better received ?

It’s got to be the deluxe sound of a barrel being scraped IMO
I’m not sure I could say what’s even on it tbh. I do remember that the sound although better than Don’t Stop is still bad. I don’t think Quo have had an amazing sounding album since RTYD. Maybe ISOTFC comes close

Shit version of Caroline... Law and Wild were good... After that, a bag of shit.
DS had good versions of WYWITR, PM, J&M and ICHTGG, other than that, shite!
Famous...Forget about it. Rave On was good but, you can hear it in the vocals and playing.
I am enjoying the Montreux (spelling?) tracks. Band were on fire live between 01 and 05

The crowd loved the guitar swapping which, if you are seeing it for the first time as I suspect most of them were , is pretty cool .

Or maybe I saw them too many times during that era

I usually discard older cds one had deluxe ones unless they include something not on the newer ones. I will keep hold of my original copy of riffs as I managed to get one with the live dvd.

I like tobacco Road and the vocals on I fought the law. A good sound throughout but I don't have the enthusiasm to revisit this and listen again
Interesting that on the road again seems popular. I think the vocals are painful, Francis just can't hit those high notes
Those reviews are very kind
8 out of 10? 😆

I don’t know why he had to go for the high note ….he could just have sung it similar to what came before and after So an 8/10 instead of 9

It's like spelling recommendation ... it's hard to know when to stop.
I got Riffs for the live version of 4500 (IIRR), not for any other reason.

I got Riffs for the live version of 4500 (IIRR), not for any other reason. Did they think it was a new audience every night, every tour? They probably thought it was a major change to the setlist Think it's one of few times everyone was united in their opinion on the old board. That static 8 year setlist. Bula Quo being another

I still don't have these deluxe releases. Santa chinned me last night over a glass of Medoc and asked if they should go on the Christmas list. I said " go for it, Santa", like Bonnie Tyler encouraging Shaky, so perhaps I can summon up the patience to wait. I think I'll manage I agree that Riffs might actually be the best of the three covers albums but, seriously, is that really any recommendation? Notwithstanding that it reached the ludicrous stage of the band covering themselves! Although we know why they did it. This was a covers album too far and they knew it. But they were over that barrel that some thought they were scraping the bottom of.
