Never really heard of either end of the spectrum with this one...
I assume for many its a "meh" track.
It was this and Caroline MK and 89 that got me into guitar...
I like it anyways. Inoffensive. Not heard Rossi put a vocal in like that before... On the chorus

Possibly the best of a bad bunch on that album . I still find it hard to believe only 2 years previously they were at Milton Keynes. Cheers

Always quite liked it.. But the keyboardy bits are very irritating.
Apparently Francis wanted this as the first single, record company went with Rollin' Home.

It would've been a horrible comeback. The contrast after Rollin' Home is pretty deflating, not so much due to the song itself, which has some potential, but the arrangement with, as you say, those ridiculous keyboard sounds, and the production with washed out guitars and distant drums.
With a different approach, this could have been at least a decent pop-Quo sound, but as it is, it's disappointing.

I've always quite liked this one, but it was let down by Pip's weak production. I would have loved to have heard how the album would have come out if Dave Edmunds had been allowed to finish it; his work on Rollin' Home and Red Sky were far superior to the other songs.

That's the thing with Quo, I always wanted to love a new album, as I'm sure most of us did and desperately trying to find the magic. At least some of the guitar solos were excellent whether Rossi's or possibly Pip's handy-work. At the time 'Calling' was a track I would play a few times in one sitting as had something about it.
Agree with No Contract that the Edmunds' produced track Red Sky is a bit of magic as commercial singles go, with elements of ZZ Top perhaps.

Much prefer the 'early mix' for this track

Much prefer the 'early mix' for this track True, that definitely has more grit.

That early mix sounds pretty much the same as the final version. Except it's monoed, has a bass boost and some reduction on the high mids (probably because it was sourced from vinyl) and only some minor mix differences.
It's missing the drum pads hits (that appear for example on the section starting at 2:42 (pre-solo), on the album version. Piano is also louder on the early version) and it's also missing the ride cymbal bursts that I now see are on the final version just to mask some poor editing. I would say the song was recorded with a noticeably different structure from what was released in the end.
On the early version, one synth phrase, near the end, is louder, but that could be because it was not panned as wide as on the final version. I can't be sure, but the final version also seems to have a sample being triggered by the snare, played as another snare layer.
Nonetheless, I always find these fascinating and would love to have it released properly.
