The perfect blend of Frame's country leanings and boogie.

As the old 90's hit goes; things that make you go hmm.... Late 1976, Quo bring out a new single to keep us interested and ticking over because a live album is on the way which, strangely I always thought, didn't spawn a single. Anyway, I'm too young to know it's even a cover. I buy it, not having heard it. Well, it was Quo. Bound to be great. On first listen, I suddenly find I'm not immediately drawn to it. Well, that's the first time that's happened In retrospect, little did I know it, but this was the first line in the sand. And, for me, probably the most important. Certainly the most tangible. Something had changed. But maybe you had to be there. I appreciate this track is a favourite with many. And what they do play of it live is terrific. But it all began with this. In late 1976.

I'm sort of trying to compare then with what had come before. Quo changed a bit and moved on; to basically the next phase. Although I wasn't aware of that at the time. And I went with them. But, for me, this was the start of not really knowing what you were going to get on record next. The guarantee that I would love everything they did was suddenly not there. Rockin' is seen as the line in the sand but this was the real start.

My take on WSOL is probably a bit unique, I absolutely love it...but only for the instruments, not overly bothered about the vocal but something about the guitars always gives me goosebumps, considering my main preference is bands like Megadeth / Slayer / Testament / Sepultura it probably is a bit odd . Often tried over the years to find just the backing track or remove the vocals somehow but nothing, thats was the reason I did this...

One of the main changes was that Roger Glover produced it, of course. I always thought the production was a bit dull and I wasn't sure when I first heard it on TOTP but I like it now. Your version is excellent, as always, Jamie

Enjoyed that. You've obviously studied the layers of guitar in the original pretty closely. I guess what Keith Richards calls "the ancient art of guitar weaving" or something.
Always found that to be one of the recording's strengths - good production that made something simple and listenable out of something maybe a bit more complex. Quo's WSOL demo is awful in comparison.
I think they then experimented a bit too much on the RAOTW album - too many different guitars/sounds, sounds a bit all over the place, even more so now that the remix has attempted to pare down the sound.

I've never particularly liked it and would definitely agree that it marked the end of an era.
Of course, if rumour is to be believed then there's only two of the Frantic Four on it! Not only is allegedly Roger Glover playing bass on the released version, I remember an interview in which Rossi and Parfitt discussed playing snare and cymbals on it, which would account for the totally un-Spud-like simplicity of the drumming.
The full band are audibly on the so-called "demo" version which I personally much prefer. I don't believe for a second that it's actually a demo though, it's far too polished and complete and with a shedload of overdubs (brass, fiddle etc). My guess is that it was probably intended for release but either band or record company had second thoughts. But as I say, that's just a guess

The 'demo', to me, sounds like it wanted to have a fiddle on it but is actually some sort of keyboard imposter. A fiddle would have worked really well but what we ended up with was quite a nasty sound giving ME goose bumps; but the same as like nails down a blackboard Unless it is a fiddle. In which case, someone needed some extra lessons
