I really like this song. Probably their best ballad imo
Who plays the second solo on the extended edit. Sounds nothing like Francis guitar work.
Is it pip Williams? Some slightly dodgy fret work in the second half wonder why they didn’t do another take.

The general consensus of opinion is that it was Pip. I personally always thought it was Francis. There are aspects of the solo that do sound like him. But I'm no expert and no one has ever officially said. I'm not mad about the song. It's OK. But I have to say the 12" extended version takes it up a notch from the bog standard single which, to me, is a little dull. Like most Quo ballads. Like most ballads

I never picked up on this. To my ears it doesn't sound even slightly like Francis, even taking the change of "tone" into consideration. In 1988 I would have scratched my hear, nowadays I just hink "hired gun". Finding out long after the time that Francis had pushed Pip into playing guitar on some tracks was a eureka moment. (I think there were other stand ins too. Didn't Albert Lee play some stuff for them?)

Didn't Albert Lee play some stuff for them?) I wasn't aware of anything regarding Albert Lee playing for Quo but now you mention it the solo in 'Fine Fine Fine' must surely be Exhibit A

It's Pip, he confirmed it in one of the interviews he did a few years back.

There is nothing in that solo that Francis can't or couldn't play.
His decisions at times baffle me

Francis = insecure show-off - but you can take him to also be those two things on their own.
Insecure about his guitar playing - definitely, and it's partly why he's practised away all the unique character he had in his lead playing over the years to be replaced by much more standard, slick, predictable soloing. A shame in a way, but he's probably happier with the result in his own head.
Back then though, when he's still insecure about it, easy option - get the producer to do it, especially at a time when they were wanting to sound much more slick and professional any way.
Pip also did the Spanish guitar solo in "Magic" by the sound of it.

It sounds nothing like Francis playing That wasn't my point nor what I was saying! I'm fully aware it's Pip! My point was, there is nothing Pip played there that Francis cannot play! Hence why I said some of Francis' decisions baffle me! He could easily have done it himself instead of having Pip do it!

There is definitely a fairly wide gulf between how the fans view Quo's legacy and how Rossi and the record company do, but that's always been the Quo way (with the exception of Alan's [ultimately unsuccessful] efforts) and their, erm, status as a working, live band overtook their creative integrity in the studio when they inevitably ran out of good ideas for albums.
I think they stopped believing in themselves once they began to fracture in the late 70's, but seemed to retain a thirst for live work. So yeah, there was going to be a lot of ideas tossed away in the studio because they no longer had any artistic integrity. Put them in front of thousands of adoring fans though and they were happy. Show me a post-85 album that has any kind of genuinely joyful sound to it, and i'll listen (with the exception of RTYD maybe - had some balls, and a convincingly 'live' sound).

I'm fairly sure it wasn't so much a case of Rossi not being able to play certain solos etc but a case of Rossi lacking enthusiasm near the end of the studio sessions for 'Ain't Complaining'. Possibly a case of Quo takin' care of business elsewhere and maybe doing media stuff and prep stuff for gigs as a priority? I think Pip talked about this and being left to finish the album. That "you do it Pip" attitude that crept in after a time.
Reminded me of when Quo left the studio during the recording of 'Wild Side Of Life' to head off to Oz (I think?) and Roger Glover ended up tinkering with the track and playing bass on the final mix of the single even though Alan had laid down his bass track previously.
