Cannot for the life of me understand why this was never played live...
It's a live song! It had all the potential to become a live favourite...
Baffling...
That driving bass... Classic Alan 😎

Maybe they thought it was below par. Like me I think had they released it as a single instead of a B-side it might have made the set. They must have toyed with the idea given they made a video for it. It's OK. But those 'whistling' noises in places (outro mainly), which is presumably some sort of keyboard thing, irritate me. Always has. But I can be a bit pedantic

Good call freewilly. I gave it a spin just now - nice and bouncy for a Friday afternoon. Agree it would play well live. Alan on bass but written by Francis and Bernie! What I find fascinating is that the lyrics are so sad and dark but the music is quite cheerful! I always remembered it from the album. I think the difference to listening to tracks back then was that I always listened to the whole album in one go. Hard with a cassette tape to do anything else. Now, we can listen to a track in isolation and they sound different. This one is better for doing that. btw - the Quo official site has had a facelift.

Every single argument against a song being played live falls apart once you say that 😁

Aye, I just mentioned Alan as the bass sticks out a mile in the mix

Brilliant song! It's in my car CD player (remember them? ) and gets played several times a week. It's another song that I never tire of, no matter many times I hear it. Love the pounding bass and double-tracked vocals from Francis. I did a Quo mix for a young lad at work and included Runaway. Out of all the songs (mainly 70s hits), this is the track that he raved about when he came in the next day. I'm not sure that this actually means anything, other than a bloke I work with likes it too.

I really loved the album at the time. As a teenager I could sit for hours listening to the vinyl album with headphones, over and over. Something about the 'sound' of the album really hit the spot at the time.
Good point from curiousgirl about how many of us listened to entire albums rather than tracks in isolation unless you wanted to scratch your vinyl album to billy-o. Listening to Runaway now in isolation and can appreciate certain things more now that perhaps I didn't previously.
Runaway is a foot tapper that's for sure, though it didn't hold my attention completely in the late 70s the way some of the other tracks on the album did.

Thought it was no more ordinary and hadn't played it since I bought the album when it was released. Listened it to it just now and it's better than I remembered, could it be about the tax exile period.

Vinyl was such a ritual. If I listen to any of the albums made before the advent of CD's I actually pause the CD,stream or download at the end of what was side 1 and then continue what was side 2. It only takes 45 seconds to travel back decades.

It's a great album track. Love the intro and outro...
I'd guess they tried it for stage and it didn't work

I'll have to give it another listen, not that I haven't heard it hundreds of times already. But the points made about playing an entire album rather than having a track selection is a valid one. This song obviously stood out for me in that context as one of the weaker tracks on the, ahem, LP. Just had a quick look at the official website. Whoever administers it has left in "new page". Naturally, there's nothing on it

The site certainly had a make over alright...
Alright to flog merchandise with Rick, Alan, John and Pete's images on it, whilst openly talking down about them though...
Fucking hell, read the room
