Surprised that didn't become more popular. Still love it... Lyrics are great It's twee and awful, that is why!

I'm the other way with the lyrics, velvet wings made no sense to me!
A poor choice of single, formulaic. You could almost hear Joe public say "oh no not another one".
A good intro, like how it's direct. Memory tells me there's an extended version with decent ending?
At the time I'd have probs liked it as an album track. As it was I simply couldn't understand why Keep Em Coming wasnt the single. It was fresh, original and played with swagger.
Its chart peak of 39 tells us much about the state of the fanbase at the time

On the whole I think UTI is a good album with some really good songs, but I never liked The Way it Goes. Something about the melody really grates with me.
Think it was a very poor choice as the lead single. Seems to me instead of saying, what is the best song on the album to release. It was more, what is the track that is closest to the public’s perception of what a Quo song sounds like. Then went with that, even though it wasn’t a particularly good version of this idea of how Quo sound.

As with most Quo albums, any number of tracks could have been singles. But this one wasn't the strongest as the lead release to promote the album. I feel I could say that about numerous singles in the past 30 odd years.
The CD single had a sampler of the forthcoming album on it, which wasn't that bad an idea.

Godawful Quo-by-numbers cack. Easily the worst thing on its parent album. Not the worst on the album but agree totally shit. It's just twee, awful.
