I know we all like Down Down, 4500, Backwater etc, but this really sums up all I love about Quo.
It’s melodic, melancholy, beautifully produced and played, crunchy but not heavy guitars. And I like the lyrics.
Never, ever get bored of listening to this.

Mystery Song breasts the tape for me - probably helped by the 'rock god' style start to the video with Rick in all his pomp.

For me I constantly change Quo favourites.
Yes I love Caroline , 4500 times, Slowtrain, Backwater , DWMT, Paper Plane and countless other classics.
I saw the light is up there with the very best of Quo.
Not much tops that for me

I have an all time top five Quo songs, mainly tracks that work live. This would be one of my top songs that would not work on a live set. It would be definitely be in my all time top ten tracks of all time though. Wonderful lyrics.

If I really have to plump for one, and like the other examples above, its such a difficult thing to do, I am going for Break The Rules. It was the first Quo song I ever heard (back when it was released in '74), so it's special to me in that context. I just love the unique triple solo but unfortunately it has never been handled well live over the years. A certified gold blues/shuffle workout and should have been massive!

Just for the record (see what I did there?  ), it will always be the original Hello! version of Forty-Five Hundred Times. I know longer live versions usually get the nod - and also the studio remake in 1991 - but if you were there in 1973, this track was almost life-changing. And I'm being serious. I was a teenager and overnight I suddenly realised what I wanted to listen to; any and all variations of this type of music. If it was religious, it would have been called an epiphany Actually, it was very close to a religious experience. I was converted |

I've always loved this one too, I always thought it would of been a great opener too, the intro with the lights coming in and out, thought it would of been fantastic. I don't think this ever got played live either....

I then bought Hello as soon as I could, played the first 7 songs and was blown sideways. Back then you got the album before they had been reviewed and a spoiler was something a dickhead fitted on a MK1 Escort. I started listening to 4500 Times and even now I still wonder how you go from strange quiet strumming to a musical express train blasting into the distance in 9 or so controlled minutes, it never was mayhem. If you can explain what's good about this track in technical detail I think you've missed the point. There were musical Titans at work back then but they wanted to tell you something, a story, spiritualism, drugs, America..always fcuking something I could not understand. I'd always liked bits of something, a guitar solo here, a bit of rock n roll there but every time I liked something they would go off on a tangent or kill it dead. And then came a band whose sound was what I had been listening out for and I could actually relate to. |
