I managed to get hold of a dance mix of In The Army Now a few years back (the OJ Remix) and it's pretty good. If you like dance music that is. If not, steer clear What version? This one? Was that the band dressed up as Darth Vader and Stormtroopers? A David Walker idea to appeal to a younger audience perhaps?

It seems that the missing albums like Quid Pro Quo, Under the Influence etc are now back on Spotify.

I'm not sure it is this one, although it's a very similar idea. It had a different video; more like a cartoon. But it was quite a few years ago - my iTunes library tells me I downloaded it in 2008. But I can't find it on YouTube now.

I know it feels like yesterday but the first Star Wars film came out before Rockin'! Actually, when I think about that, it's just a little scary

I still think of Star Wars as being state of the art!

I hate this song live (although it's always provided a great opportunity to have a p*ss and grab another beer!), but I've always quite liked the recorded version. First time I heard it was on a music show called 'Rock Around The Dock' in 1986 (I believe it was recorded at Liverpool Docks - some creative type would have been paid a fortune to come up with that title...). I watched the programme because I knew Quo would be doing Red Sky (which I loved) and then they mimed to this new track afterwards and I thought it was pretty good as soon as I heard it. Not good enough that I'd choose to play it, but it doesn't offend me when it comes on Rock FM. Bl00dy hell, I'd forgotten about that! I think that might have been the first time I'd heard the track as well. Thanks for the memory prompt I also think Frankie Goes to Hollywood were on the TV broadcast along with a number of others that never caught my attention for any length of time. I first became acquainted with the song when watching the 'Rock Around The Dock' broadcast at the time in '86. The song and the location out on the jetty with spotlights streaming through the night air and smoke machines working over-time certainly sealed its atmospheric credentials. Then the monochrome video with the serious faces really gave things an atmospheric twist and turning the cheeky chappie Quo persona on its head. On one hand I figured the song could be a huge hit but on the other it had the potential to alienate sections of the old Quo brigade. Strange looking back now and Rhino actually looking more rock than the other two that evening in terms of stage apparel! What it did do especially was making it clear that the days of Spinning Wheel Blues Quo were very much over and Rossi would be trying his hand at anything remotely pop-rock chart friendly.

I don’t get what the problem is with the song. From hard rock to a joke…..hmmmmmm. Dirty Water anyone ? In the Army now is the most viewed song on YouTube as well. It wasn’t novelty or jokey……I don’t think the song did their image any harm at all . It was just different . Odd really because a lot of people I knew found the look of the band in the video, really off putting. But they were aiming for a different audience. The song itself is bland, yet popular. But not even close to the worst thing they recorded.

Did many Quo singles have the chord progression of In the Army. It’s a melancholy minor chord progression that has universal appeal but I think was unusual for a Quo single. Not surprising it had a wider appeal. I know it’s not their song but many singer songwriters/serious bands try to master one of those lament/eerie type of songs.

That's in a major key and then moves to the relative minor and then changes to a major key again. Think there might be another change in there too... Can't remember

Is In The Army Now!! Unbelievable, I hate the song so much. To me it is everything about how Quo changed from a hard rock back to a joke. I'm with thewildone on this, I'm 'fraid. Never liked it, still don't. On the rare/unlikely occasion that it's on a cd I'm listening to, it's an instant 'skipper'. Nothing redeeming about it, 80s pop [ ]
Have a nice day!

A song I've had a strange relationship with - sometimes it sounds slightly cheesy, others not and I quite enjoy it.
No doubt of its impact then and now. My first exposure to Quo was that single, 1986. The video played as many times as any other big chart act on the music shows. My friends all knew who Quo were as that song was such a hit.
It does have a groove all its own, and I do like the way it builds, verse by verse. It has become perhaps their most defining song judging by Spotify and YouTube numbers.

I always think that quite a few bands morphed from one thing into another over several years. There are quite a few that I used to like then drifted away from them because they became, I don't know, more commercial? ELO were one. I loved things like Roll Over Beethoven, 10538 Overture and Ma-Ma-Ma Belle but once they went stratospheric with their Out Of The Blue album, I wasn't interested. Didn't like it. Or them after that. Same with Queen. Up to Sheer Heart Attack, brilliant. After that, not really for me. And I guess when the Stones released Emotional Rescue there must have been a few raised eyebrows. Quo did something similar from the early to mid-80's onwards but thankfully they were still able to come up with stuff that I really liked on a regular basis. In The Army Now maybe reflects more than any other song the direction they were intending to take. Softer, lighter and definitely more commercial. Despite the success they'd had in NOT being deliberately commercial
