Francis is lying about Alan hating RAOTW as he listed that (and Accident Prone) as some of his favourite Quo songs. First I've heard about DW too. It was a great live song so not sure why there would be any issues with that?
First thing that hit me, that was. I know there is the story that "the band" were skeptical about Rockin (not sure why, Fogerty was a highly respected rock songwriter) but I never heard before that Alan was particularly anti. It makes more sense if he didn't care for Dirty Water.
I note the article doesn't mention that Alan and Dayle were having a baby at that point, which is why Alan didn't come back. Or have I got the wrong date there?

No mention in Ling's article that the song was first meant for Rossi's solo album as Alan stated in an interview. Interesting - If Francis had a huge solo hit with it......would that have been the end of Quo? I could definitely see a parallel timeline with a decade of solo Francis off the back of that record success, and then a big Quo reunion in the 90's or early 2000's. In pop terms I can see that might seem like a possibiity, but in reality I don't think Francis has ever produced "solo" work of the quality to keep him in the pop charts. (Just like Quo didn't in their very early days.) I suppose he might have got lucky with one or two songs that are now "Quo" songs.

Michael Jackson was on top of the world with Thriller and Off The Wall and had Bad still to come in 1987. Prince had just put out Purple Rain. Bryan Adams just had a smash hit with Run to You George Michael was just about to go solo and had a huge hit with Careless Whisper. Phil Collins was one of the biggest selling solo artists in the world They're just solo artists off the top of my head. I haven't even mentioned Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, U2 etc. At what point in time did Francis look at this and think he could go toe to toe with that lot, as a solo artist without Status Quo, producing stuff like Modern Romanace? Cocaine and ego are a bad mixture

It could have been a big step forward for him But, be it insecurities or just general spite, he released it under the Quo name and for the general public, its a nothing song. It's like Oh Baby to the general public

I had 2 Margie drinks last night. Very yum. But...they were probably my first Margie drinks since the mid eighties as I couldn't bear to endorse Quo's most hated, detested, despised, song ever recorded. Have I grown up? Nope? Have I forgiven Francis for recording under Quo and releasing the most despised song of all time? Nope. Will I ever move on from the blackest period in Quo history? Nope. Will I ever let a pissy country pop pap ditty stop clouding my judgement of the band and everything they have done since then? Nope.
I enjoyed my drinks last night but I doubt if I my lips will touch a Margie ever again. I gave it a chance but the memories run deep and still hurt. I will take the disdain for Margie Time to the grave with me as did Alan.
Scarred for life. Thanks Francis.

Ha fun fact, Francis says drinking with Queen got him into them, the place I drink them in is called Queens. It's not fun but tis a fact

You could have had 40 years less of bitterness from a 3 minute pop song you don’t like. What a waste of energy.
