A nice surprise this one. Richie is a very talented musician and was unexpected he would come up with something like this or even contribute to songwriting when he was recruited. Backbone became a good album due to multiple contributions from all the members something Quo had not done much consistently over the years.

I think I may be one of the dissenting voices here. It should be a belter but it falls a little short and I'm not entirely sure why. It certainly has a great riff, although if I'm being picky I'm not mad on that slide fill you can hear in the background. Quo do a fair bit of that ( Looking Out For Caroline is the same for example) but Micky Moody or JJ Cale it isn't. So it might be the vocals. Both my sister and I think it sounds like a very young Alan Lancaster before his voice matured and was able to deliver stuff like Backwater/Just Take Me. I can hear Alan singing the song perfectly. Huge potential with this one but slightly unfulfilled. 6/10

For me it actually adds something to the song. I get the point I think that Mickey Moody or JJ cale would do that sort of thing better but for me that would bring the risk that if it would sound more like that it could also start sounding that they would be trying to imitate or approach that style too much. It's not suppused to sound like anyone else either for me. I can definitely agree though with ot sounding like a Young Alan singing. And only since shortly since I read ypour post because since then I listened to the song several times again and I could suddenly hear what you are pointing out and that surprised me a bit 'cos I hadn't thought of it like that before.

I don’t dislike it but Face the Music is better, for me .
Having said that, I never skip it .
And it’s certainly not a bad track.
That’s the thing about Backbone , Crazy Crazy apart, for me there’s not a bad track.
Just maybe not enough outstanding tracks like there was on Heavy Traffic.
Each to their own😊

Not a bad track besides Crazy Crazy for me either

Can't agree with the young Alan comparison at all, i'm sorry!
To these lugs, Alan had a kind of affected, mid-Atlantic accent to his singing in those very early days, slightly cringey in a trying-too-hard-to-fit-in-with-current-trends way. Kudos for trying to be commercial, but i guess he just hadn't found his voice yet, and yeah, they were SO young at the time.
Richie here, i don't know how to describe. Yes, a young voice, but other than that, it doesn't have much character to me, yet.
The song though - this one came bounding out the gate when i first heard it - what is this? It sounds like Quo, but a completely new voice singing over the Quo-ness - a bit weird, but fresh, and enjoyable. I think it was the novelty, and it has worn off a bit. But it's still enjoyable, just not as much. Face The Music is a much more solid effort i think.
Status Quo in a minor key - different, but just somehow doesn't work as well as it does for other bands. It's the way the ears are conditioned - Quo music is generally in a major key, very much so, so it's difficult to accept anything else, but not impossible...

It's an ok track. Just played it back to back with Somethings Going on in my Head on YT. Only one winner there, but nevertheless it stands up reasonably well with that classic.

Really good
Would have loved to have heard this with a roadhouse style, stomping old school sound
I'm sure the riff (not a million miles from roadhouse) and overall sound could have been really powerful. Then again, if they'd done that it would might not have fitted. With backbone, they really did make an album that flows and fits really well together
Would be interesting to hear a tribute act play this, old Quo style
