BFY was Quo's speed album, no doubt about it. Francis explicitly mentions this when announcing ITABW at Montreux... saying they probably won't play it at quite the same speed as on the record. Also Rolling Home sounds totally breathless. Ring of a Change is OK but probably one of the band's poppiest songs since the early days. It's only the drive that masks this to a degree. The backing vocals point forward to Bernie's larger involvement (he doesn't get a credit but as I suggested on another thread, he was probably already involved). Maybe that's why on the Genesis paper from the auditions (before Collins got the part) there is a note of Bernie saying "Vocalist from Status Quo BIG SECRET". It's true, the high pitched vocals. I always assumed that one of them was Alan.

Although this song is actually my favorite of the album together with That's a Fact and Mystery Song, the backing vocals pointing forward to Bernie's involvement either later or maybe at the time already is indeed one of the things I always think of too when I hear this song
