Yes a great song and still one of my favourites. ‘Sitting by a broken window up in my bedroom swallowing wine’ .. what an enticing line to open the song. A brilliant storyline song from start to finish.

How would you categorise this song?
I think you'd have to say its a pop song. Then again, what other pop song had a guitar break like this?
Its great within the context of the album, can't imagine hearing it or wanting to hear it any other way

Alan even said it came out too poppy!

On reflection on the sad news today, I still love this song. Alan had a special gift of delivering the story of a song. When listening to this song I can see what Alan is singing.. I can see the backstreets and the image of a fella trying to get his life back in order obviously to no avail.

Absolutly hated it before learning the riff (in like 5 years or so), after that, I absolutly love it.

Broken Man?
The bloke from Backwater has moved to the South of France to escape the misery and gloom of Backwater Junction. He met a girl called Nell but once again luck was not on his side. He got arrested and imprisoned. On his release he realizes that nothing ever goes right for him, might as well keep drinking.
