Backwater , right?
Well.....I’m going to throw Over and Done into the mix.
It’s a song that nobody really ever mentions but for me, it’s great .
It’s melodic but rocky , has a great intro and actually there’s an interesting rhythm going on there during the verses.
Any thoughts ?

Very good tune, I would like to have heard how Alan would sing that one but because he didn't I'll stick with Backwater and ITABW.

Quite a few to choose from and it's funny; although I love it, I never automatically think of Backwater as Alan's best.
I usually jump to A Year, Blue Eyed Lady or Over The Edge. But, I agree; Over And Done is a thing of beauty. And Francis's voice is 100% perfect for it.

Nearly evereyone I know rate Over and done as one of their finest works. I have read on here some people not so keen. But ears are odd things. As I said to Alan when I spoke to him, A Year is your finest work. He said it probably is and I had taste. I love A Year. A Year is unusual with almost an pyschodelic edge with amazing solo. Showing like Backwater that whoever has the credit, it was a band effort to elevate the tunes. Probably now but definitely back then.

Over the Edge, fantastic driving rock song and even better live.

I also would like to add Just Take Me and Who Asked You, both of them absolutely brilliant IMO!

Without getting technical - Considering he was a bass player Alan wrote lots of songs where the bass just played the one main root note, and the guitars changed chords over the top. Particlulary in the period from 78-82
Examples would be:
Over The Edge (Same note for the first 40 seconds) Mountain Lady - the whole of the verses up to the bridge ("Im climbing mountains" ....... up to "Im taking a walk....") Who Aksed You - the first four bars of each verse ("There you go again....up to "Your silver tongue...") Stones - all through the verses The wild ones - all through the verses
Whether that's limitations as a songwriter, a trick he liked or whatever I don't know, but I think it gives his songs of 78-81 a certain menace, and atmosphere.
In fact I love all the songs above, with the exception of the terrible Stones.

I like most of his stuff that he wrote or co-wrote. He always came up with something different, I remember a critic reviewing the RAOTW album and commenting how good Too Far Gone was. When I got any of the albums and looked at the writing credits I always knew what Rossi/Young or Rossi/Frost was going to sound like but Lancaster could and would surprise.

As above really, but for me it's Broken Man, don't know what it is about the song, I just love the arrangement, but it's quo not being too serious and it works. On the Level gets played every week, without fail and it sounds better every time....

Backwater. One of Quo's finest! He wrote lots of great songs.. But to me, it's a standout.
